DORCHESTER — John B. Cruz Jr. popularly known as "Bertie" was born on May 31, 1919 to Caroline and John B. Cruz, Sr. in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Bertie obtained his early education in Wareham and thereafter pursued carpentry, drafting and engineering at Boston Trade School, Boston Hart Trade School and Franklin Institute.

As founder of the "oldest 100 percent minority-owned construction firm in Massachusetts, "Bertie Cruz has served as a role model and leader in minority communities throughout the Boston area, Lending his technical and business expertise to other minority firms striving to be successful in the industry. John B. Cruz Construction Co, Inc. is especially proud of the fact that minority contractors have performed an overwhelming 70 percent of its work, thus helping to foster minority businesses and strengthen inner city communities.

In addition to hiring qualified minority workers and making special efforts to utilize services of local minority businesses, Mr. Cruz also addressed one of the most pressing needs of the inner city community, that of the need for development of affordable housing. To the Cruz family, my deepest sympathy in your loss of a great hard working man.
the last time I had seen Bertie was at mom's (thelma e.franklin- half sister) funeral, I was glad that Bertie had made it to her service knowing he was ill at the time.
sad to see a lot of the older heads leave.
Even though bertis half sister Thelma kept to her self, she always loved her brother Bertie.
Me ..I'm one of thelma's boy's and cousin.

My family and I extend condolences to Bertie's family - especially John B. Cruz III and his family; the Cruz Companies and their Staff.

Bertie will be sorely missed. His work ethic was unparalleled! I am eternally greatful for the love of family he exhibited and for the extension of that love to me.

May he rest in peace.

Bertie was a gentlemen and a wonderful dancer. I am thankful to have known him and to have danced with him. What a wonderful life to celebrate.

With love and understanding to all of the family. I have always admired how Uncle Bertie got down and worked beside all of his men - hammering and creating new structures.

I leave the following words for Uncle Bertie's family and friends:

"Death is not the ending, it is turning out the lamp because the dawn has come."

I know he will be watching over all of us.

Love, Edna (Samia)

I want to extend my condolences to the family and at the same time I want to comment on the wonderful life of Bertie. His passing marks an end to a remarkable time that began in Onset and extended to New Bedford and Boston. Although in life Bertie was often recognized and was the recipient of many awards, it would be more adequate that his life story be put in writing. What a wonderful life and it is a fabulous history of his era. It should not be forgotten with his passing.

I was able to spend wonderful times with Bertie but the best time was his trip with me to the Cape Verde Islands. It was his first time visiting the Islands and I was overwhelmed to have him as my guest. It was a family thing with him, Dot and my daughter Brigitte. They really enjoyed each other.

I know it’s a cliché but they don’t make like him anymore. He was one of a kind. I am sad that he is gone but happy that he was here and fortunate to have been related.

My son and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Mr. Bertie's family. If it wasn't for the person he was, I wouldn't have what I have to this day. May God continue to be a Blessing to you all.
