Norman E. Murray

TAUNTON — Norman E. Murray, 84, of New Bedford died Thursday June 14, 2007 at Morton Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Gladys D. (Winterbottom) Murray.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late George W. and Mary (Corbett) Murray, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Murray was formerly employed as a postal clerk at the New Bedford Post Office until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in the Battles of the Marshall Islands, Guam, and Okinawa. He was a recipient of two Purple Heart medals for wounds suffered in action with the enemy on July 21, 1944 and May 12, 1945, the Navy Presidential Unit citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign medal with four battles stars, the American Defense medal, the American Campaign medal, the Marine Good Conduct medal, and the World War II Victory medal.

He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and the Paskamansett Beagle Club.

Survivors include two sons, David A. Murray of Plymouth and Robert G. Murray of South Carolina; four brothers, James Murray of New Bedford, Fred Murray of New York, George Murray of Alabama, and Jack Murray of Florida; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery.
