Douglas Cunningham Obituary

Douglas J. Cunningham Jr., 71, of Middleboro died peacefully December 3, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was husband of Patricia E. (Knox) Cunningham for forty-four years. He was born in Brockton, August 9, 1947, and was son of the late Douglas J. and Ruth A. Heddericg Cunningham. He was raised in East Bridgewater and graduated with the class of 1965 from East Bridgewater High School. He was employed in the circulation department of The Enterprise, Brockton, for sixteen years. For many years, Doug worked at area commercial driving schools where he enjoyed preparing students to obtain a CDL driver's license. He retired from Parker Professional Driving School in 2010. Doug was a lover of classical, oldies, and Irish music. He was a John Wayne and World War II movie buff and was a N.E. Patriots fan. He also enjoyed recent gatherings with his East Bridgewater High classmates. Doug and Patti spent many years RVing with Cranberry Coachmen, Fox's Den, Cape Codders and Herring Runners camping clubs. His favorite place to camp was at Scusset Beach by the Canal. Doug was a member of the Middlebrough Auxiliary Police for 32 years and was captain of the unit. He was also a Special Police Officer for the Town of Middleborough. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he took great pride in his Harleys and was a member of the MA Chapter 1 Blue Knights. Doug is survived by his son, Douglas III and Kaitie (Savery) Cunningham and their children Doug IV and Aubrey; daughter, Maureen F. Cunningham and her two children. Doug was very proud of his grandchildren. He was the brother of Alan J. and the late Janice (Lincoln) Cunningham and Brian J. and the late Nancy (Chase) Cunningham and late infant brother, Donald. Doug also leaves nephews, Alan Cunningham II, Jason Cunningham, Brian Cunningham Jr. and Daniel Cunningham; nieces, Traci (Cunningham) Lapanna and Heather (Cunningham) Kaegael. The Cunningham family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the nursing staff at LifeCare Center of Plymouth for their outstanding care that was given to Doug in his final days. We are so sorry and shocked to learn of Doug's passing. He is Marie's cousin and Alan his brother and I were best friends during our teens and early 20's. Marie and I were introduced at one of the Cunningham cookouts in EB, dated, fell in love and married in 1971. We moved to Florida in 1986 and sadly lost touch with the family. Our deepest sympathies go out to your family and may angels wings lift Doug up to heaven to find peace and comfort.

I am stunned at the grief your families are now experiencing. I am so sorry for Douglas' passing, although I haven't sen him in years.

We played football and army in the woods with the DiGiano boys, in the best neighborhood in which to grow up.

God's blessings and strength to all of you in this most trying and unfair set of circumstances.

Patti - I am so saddened to read about Doug's passing today. We had a great time working at The Enterprise and other newspapers back in the day.

He was such a great employee and friend and so loyal to me personally that I am feeling such a profound sense of both loss and appreciation today.

I am so happy that you and Doug enjoyed a full life together.

Bless you and your family.
