Dorothy Helena Victoria Nutter (nee Hilmer), 90, a lifelong resident of East Bridgewater and North Easton, died July 19 in the loving arms of her family in the home she cherished. Dorothy Nutter was the widow of prominent area attorney Edmund Winslow Nutter. They had been married for 51 years at the time of his death in 1993. Theirs was an exceptional love story for which legendary Brockton Enterprise photographer, Stanley A. Bauman, enjoyed taking credit. He was responsible for introducing them when he sought a photo opportunity to highlight a daylight- savings-time reminder for the Enterprise. He had the distinctive clock he needed in Atty. Nutters Brockton office and found his desired, beautiful young woman to demonstrate the moving of the clock hands --Dorothy Hilmer of North Easton--in another building office. That was the only introduction they needed. Mrs. Nutter was born on March 18, 1920 at home in the parsonage of the Swedish Evangelical Lebanon Lutheran Church in North Easton, where her father was the pastor, to the late Rev. Anders Jacob and Elna E. Hilmer. The last of their five children, she was preceded in death by her four adored brothers and sisters, Lennart,, Gunnar, Doris (Fitton), and Ruth (Swanson). A large and beloved family in Sweden survives her. Like her siblings Mrs. Nutter was a graduate of Oliver Ames High School, class of 1937. Always an engaging, witty, stylish, and beautiful woman, Dorothy Nutters priorities in life were first and foremost her family and community. Her family enjoyed a warm, loving, and beautiful home and a great cook. As a hostess she was renowned, and the family memories of holidays and celebrations are bountiful and sustaining. Her town and church (The First Parish Unitarian Church of East Bridgewater) benefitted from a committed and compelling advocate. After her children were grown, Mrs. Nutter worked as chief title examiner in her husbands law firm, Nutter, Fletcher, and Parris. Mrs. Nutter leaves two daughters, Susan Keene Nutter, vice provost and director of libraries at North Carolina State University and Deborah Winslow Nutter, senior associate dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University; two sons-in-law, Joe A. Hewitt of Durham, NC, and Alan H. Rutan of Westwood; two precious grandchildren, Carolyn Hilmer Miner of London, England, and Todd Winslow Miner of New York City; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many wonderful friends. A memorial service in celebration of her life, with her nephew and godson The Rev. Alan W. Grant, D. Min officiating, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 143 Lincoln Street, North Easton, MA (
