James Savas Obituary
James "Jim" Savas of Westerly, R.I., died peacefully at his home on Monday, December 24, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Florence Savas; daughter, Annie Quinn and her husband Chuck; granddaughters, Emma, Alice and Lucy Quinn of Kentucky; son, Peter James Savas and his wife Christina of Westerly, R.I.; brother, Harry Savas and his wife Carol of Stoughton; and his nephew, Jared Savas of San Leandro, Calif. Jim was born April 13, 1939, in Lawrence, to Peter and Artemis Savas. He graduated from Brockton High School, where he excelled in sports and academics. He went on to graduate from the University of Mass. at Amherst. He received a master's degree at the University of R.I. and did post-graduate work at the University of Connecticut. Jim began his professional career as a software engineer at IBM where he was part of an international team of scientists that developed the first modern era computer known as the 360 system. After his pioneering work at IBM, Jim, along with other IBM colleagues founded Systems Inc., a computer services firm that helped modernize the record keeping functions of many companies in the Northeast. Jim was an adjunct philosophy professor at URI, and a professor of computer programming, calculus, and trigonometry at CCRI, Johnson & Wales, and Three Rivers UConn. His family and friends will remember Jim for his brilliant mind, loving heart, gentle soul, and courageous spirit. He was a lifelong seeker of truth. And, he had "one hell of a sense of humor".
