He especially enjoyed golfing with his longtime friend of 70 years, the late Robert "Bob" Capen, the thrill of scratching a "winning" lottery ticket, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He spent many hours watching the birds at his backyard feeders, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Brockton.
