HOLBROOK Lt. John J. McCarthy, Jr., 59 years of age died unexpectedly at his home in Holbrook on Wednesday May 7, 2008. He has been a Holbrook resident since 1973. He was born in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School. He had received a degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University in Boston. He served with the Braintree Police Department for nearly 30 years. He retired three years ago. He had been employed by the Brookline Police Department prior to joining the Braintree Police Force. He was a member of the Braintree Police Superior Officers Association. Lt. McCarthy was a Vietnam Veteran of the US Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam and received the Vietnamese Service Medal with three stars and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with distinction and the Combat Action Ribbon. He was a member of the Marine Corps Association and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation at Quantico, Virginia. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League. Lt. McCarthy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and the Disabled American Veterans. Lt. McCarthy also belonged to the Braintree Lodge Sons of Italy, the Order of Eagles in Weymouth, the VFW Post in Braintree, The National Rifle Association of America, the Retired State and County Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts, AARP and the Horticultural Society. He was a member of the US Golf Association and enjoyed golfing at many locations. He also enjoyed gardening and carpentry. He was known for his devotion to his family. He was an organ donor and participated in the organ donation program. He was a communicant of St. Josephs Church in Holbrook. Lt. McCarthy is survived by his wife Antoinette M. (Foti) McCarthy, a son Norfolk County Sheriffs Department Corrections Officer Stephen J. McCarthy married to Elise (Norman) McCarthy of Holbrook and a daughter Michelle L. McCarthy of Holbrook. He was the loving grandfather of Marissa Catherine McCarthy and Ella Grace McCarthy. He is the son of Mary (McManus) McCarthy of Billerica. His father was the late John J. McCarthy. He is survived by three brothers William McCarthy of NH, Daniel McCarthy married to Audrey McCarthy of Newburyport and Robert McCarthy married to Patti McCarthy of Medford. He is survived by two sisters Mary A. Costa married to Vincent Costa of Brockton and Theresa Nickerson of Billerica. Funeral from the Mortimer N. Peck- Russell Peck Funeral Home 516 Washington Street BRAINTREE on Tuesday May 13th at 8:00 a.m. Funeral Mass in St. Josephs Church 153 South Franklin Street, HOLBROOK at 9:00 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
