Stewart Elliott Obituary

Stewart Witney Elliott
SPARTANBURG, SC- Stewart Witney Elliott passed away on Friday, June 5, 2015, after a brief illness. He was 77 years old.
Born in Detroit, Mich. on August 28, 1937, Stewart was the son of James McKinney Elliott and Ella Crawford Heath Elliott. He was predeceased by his one brother, James McKinney Elliott, Jr. who passed away in 2013.
Stewart spent his childhood in Hinsdale, Ill., graduated from Virginia Episcopal School, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the South in 1960, and later earned a Masters Degree from Converse College. He lived briefly in Richmond, VA, where he was active in the Jaycees and was named Key Man of the Year two years in a row, before settling in Spartanburg in the early 1970s. He remained an intentional and willing servant of the town and its people throughout his life.
Stewart married Anne Elizabeth Mayo in 1977, and the couple had two daughters - Witney Heath Elliott Fisher (Dr. Tim) and Mary Elizabeth Elliott Edwards (Trey). He worked for District 7 for over thirty years as an Educator, Registrar, and Administrative Assistant. He will be remembered fondly by many as the statistician for the Spartanburg Vikings basketball and football programs. Spartanburg High School students will remember Mr. Elliott as the one who called out their name at graduation. He volunteered his time and energy for numerous non-profits, notably St. Luke's Free Clinic and Mobile Meals. Stewart saw the best in all people, and treated everyone he met with kindness and a smile. He was passionate about education and for over a decade committed himself to the Citizen Scholar program, both as a Board member and a mentor. Stewart encouraged and supported countless students to apply themselves, and to believe in themselves. Stewart loved all sports, mentored numerous students into college, loved spending time with his family, and loved his church, The Episcopal Church of the Advent, at which he served in numerous capacities, from youth basketball coach, youth leader to the Vestry and Stewardship Chairman.
As well as his wife and two daughters, Stewart is survived by five beloved grandchildren; Elizabeth Ammons Edwards, Thomas Harrison Edwards (Toby) and James Henry Edwards, and Elliott McKerchar Fisher (Ellie) and David Heath Fisher.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent officiated by the Reverend Clay H. Turner and Reverend Deborah D. Apoldo. Interment will follow the service in the Cleveland Bell Tower Columbarium with a reception following in the Parrish and Community Life Center.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent Foundation, Mobile Meals, or a charity of your choice.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Elliott. I got to know him in the late 1970s and early 1980s when I was the statistician at Union High School.
He was a complete gentleman in all that he did, and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to have known him.

To the family of Stewart Elliott. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy and condolences on the passing of a true Southern Gentleman, a dedicated teacher, registrar, and an outstanding statistician. Stewart was a matter of fact individual who wanted to make sure that whatever endeavor he was involved in that it was going to be right, correct and to the point.
It was a treasure to hear him talk about sports topics, the Vikings, and other items of interest at our lunch table in the faculty cafeteria. Stewart was one person who could give and take with some of the table banter, especially when he would refer to his social security number as #1.
The faculty enjoyed hearing Stewart's voice over the intercom and especially at the end of the year roast of certain faculty members departing or retiring from SHS.
Stewart had a great deal of character, fortitude, as well as a true patriot to our country and to SHS.
Stewart was admired by one and all. The Elliott family should be blessed by the Grace of God.
I am thankful that I had the opportunity to be a member of the SHS faculty, as a JV girls Basketball coach and as a history teacher. Stewart was one administrator who showed a great deal of interest in my warfare class. He enjoyed discussing military battles and tactics during our lunch period. Stewart cared about faculty members a great deal.
The Vikings will forever have a legacy of one, Stewart Elliott, who cared about the athletic program, as well as caring about the athletes.
The family can be proud of the memories coming forth about Stewart. May God's Grace be with your family as a fine Christian is checking on the stats with the angels in Heaven. God Bless Stewart.

A more honorable man cannot be found on this Earth. Mr. Elliott welcomed me with open arms when I started teaching at SHS 1997. He always made time to stop and speak to me and we talked about everything. I miss our conversations about the Braves the most since he was a huge fan just like me. The halls of our school no longer reverberate with his booming voice, telling us which period students should be in. That awesome voice will fit in well in heaven. You were a great man, Mr. Elliott and a shining example of how to treat others. May we all strive to be like you.

I was truly saddened to learn of my long time good friend Stewart Elliott's passing. He was the consummate professional. For more than 20 seasons, he served alongside me as the official game statistician on the Shrine Bowl of the Carolina's radio broadcast heard annually by over 100 radio stations throughout the Carolina's. His instant recall was incredible. He was the best of the best. Stewart was one of the most respected people that I have ever had the privilege of knowing because of his kindness and caring for others. Spartanburg has truly been blessed because he passed our way.

To Stewart's family and friends. May the God of our fathers hold you in the palm of his hand during this most unsettling time.

My sincere condolences to Anne, Witney,Mary ,and the entire Elliott family. As a colleague and friend for 40 years , I admired and respected him for his loyalty, dedication , and his desire to do whatever was necessary to serve the students at SHS. If you wanted a lively conversation, just mention a sports topic and Stewart would impress you with his knowledge . He possessed so many positive attributes but perhaps his greatest was that he was such a true gentleman. He was one of a kind and will be missed by so many - but we will never forget him.
