I knew Charles when I was a 10 and he was a senior at VA Episcopal School. My dad was his pediatric allergist. He had had terrible asthma attacks when he was a child growing up in Virginia. My dad saved his life, and we were invited to his father's farm in Fairfax. He was a soft-spoken young man, and a true southern gentleman. He had no siblings and no heirs. The end of a wonderful Southern family line.

Charles was so kind to my family and remembered all of their birthdays right to the end. I couldn't have asked for a better friend over the last 20 years.
