Harold McManus, Sr.
INMAN--Harold Stanley McManus, Sr., legendary Byrnes High School basketball coach and athletic director, passed away Sunday morning at his home in Inman, SC. He was born July 2, 1942 to the late Olen and Hattie Lane McManus in Lancaster, SC.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Faye Brinkley McManus; a cherished son, Harold Stanley McManus, Jr. (Hal) and daughter-in-law, Alison McManus of Boiling Springs; two beloved grandchildren, Hannah Alexandria McManus and Harold Stanley McManus III (Trey); a sister, Ruth Norwood of Rock Hill; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Lib Holland of Greer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Richard, and Jerry.
Mr. McManus graduated from Pfeiffer University, received his master's degree from Converse College and administrative certification from Clemson University. He led Byrnes High School basketball teams to two state championships and four upper state championships; He was named SC basketball coach of the year in 1976, 1979, and 1990. He was selected regional coach of the year eight times and area coach of the year five times. He was a member of the SC Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame, the Byrnes High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Pfeiffer University Hall of Fame. Although he was proud of these accomplishments, he was most proud of his relationships with his former players whom he called, 'my kids.'
The memorial service will be held at Lake Bowen Baptist Church, 404 Sugar Ridge Road, Inman, SC, on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 at 6:00 pm with Rev. Brad Atkins officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial contributions to go to the Building Fund of Lake Bowen Baptist Church, where Mr. McManus was a member.
