Alfred STEIN Obituary

STEIN, Alfred Edward
"Al" (Age 93)

Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, Alfred "Al" Edward Stein, 93, of Silverton, Idaho, passed away on October 10, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society of Silverton. He was born May 22, 1925 in Kellogg; Al was the son of Edward and Valerine (Zoellner) Stein.
Al attended High School in Kellogg until 1944, when he enlisted in the United States Navy. Al went to boot camp at Farragut Naval Training Center where he received his radio training. He then was sent to Treasure Island, San Francisco where he boarded his ship the USS Kilty and set sail to the Philippines. During his time at sea his ship came under attack by kamikaze pilots while his ship was serving as an escort for aircraft carriers. He was later transferred to the USS Talladega before being honorably discharged in 1946.
On August 22, 1946 Al was united in marriage to Kathleen Rollier. Kathleen preceded Al in death in 1987.
Al went on to attend the University of Idaho where he studied business and statistics for two years when his father called and asked him to come home and work at the family store. Al worked with his family helping run at one time five grocery stores until his retirement in 1993.
Al was a member of the Knights of Columbus fourth degree, the Kellogg Elks Lodge, the American Legion Gus Zoellner Post #36, the Osburn Lions Club and Rathdrum Lions Club where he served as zone chairman. Al was also very active in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rathdrum.
Al had a love for fast cars and snowmobiles. He had a need for speed and had a license plate that read "CRAZY Al". He liked to stay active and could be found walking on the bike path in Rathdrum stopping only to have conversations with friends. He also enjoyed relaxing, reading and doing family projects at the river cabin.
Al is survived by his six children Sheilagh (Bob) Chambers, Deano (Marie) Stein, Heather (Mark) Bowlby, Darren (Sue) Stein, Deasa Stein and Monty Hoskins. Al is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Al was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings June, Gus, Gertrude, Monica, Dena, James, Charles and Hubert.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Wallace with Father Jerome Montez serving as celebrant. A reception/luncheon will be held at Shoshone Golf Course following the service. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Lions Club International Foundation, Department 4547 Carol Stream, Illinois 60122-4547 USA.
The family would like to thank the caring and loving staff of the Good Samaritan Society of Silverton and Dr. Branz for the care they provided Al over the years. One may sign Al's online guest book at www.shoshonefuneralservice.com

In 1981 Al made me the meat dept. manager of his Troy store. Shortly after arriving in Troy to manage the meat dept for Al and Gus, i ran down the grocery isle and jumped over the meat case and a older lady customer thought i was crazy and called the corp. office. Al came up to Troy the next day and explained that i could not longer jump over the meat case. After he chewd' me a bit he said, " now you understand cool pepper"? And for the next 30 plus years when ever i would see Al, my name was cool pepper.
Very sad Day for the Stein's family in the passing of Al. God Bless Al and the Stein's family.
Cool Pepper!
