I served in the USAR 365th Civil Affairs Unit at Fort Lawton with Duane as the Supply Sergeant from 1966 to 1972.
Our paths met again when I served with him in the Washington Legislature from 1991 to 1993.
Duane was a very personable individual. I was pleasantly surprised to see him again 18 years later in the Legislature. I enjoyed getting to know him again as a fellow legislator.

You are my dad's close friend for 70 years, from elementary school days at Logan through ROTC at WSU, weddings, raising children, later careers and life and into old age. Our families intertwined on many occasions in Spokane, Pasco, Lacey and Vancouver while you both were parenting children into adulthood. So we feel the loss for Donna, Linda, Steve & David as well as for my dad and the rest of your loved ones. Your memorial service was a blessing and a testimony to the full orb of your life. And we're thankful for the hope of glory in Jesus.

Most people are only known in part by everyone but their family. We only knew the part that was Rep. Sommers. I am sure we were polar opposites politically and philosophically. However I will always remember him as the finest example of the true servant. Not a servant to an ideology but rather to the principle of doing what is best for people. Some may call that pragmatism. It may also be known as integrity. It was and continues to be an honor to have known him.

David and Martha Jones

I still appreciate Duane returning my call in the 90's about how to get involved doing my civic duty. He was a real gentleman.

You were the best boss that I ever had when I worked for you at EWHSA. My thoughts and prayers are with all of your family.

I've always been proud to be your daughter. Thanks for the example you lived and the wisdom, advice, stories, laughter. Your children and grandchildren will be telling your story the rest of their lives. You'll keep us smiling.
