1929 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
JOHNSON, Gladys K. Gladys K. Johnson died on December 27th, 2018 surrounded by family in Spokane, WA. She was a kind and loving mother, wife, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a second mother to many and a friend to all who met her. She lived most of her childhood in Spokane, WA and was a valedictorian from Rogers High School. She attended St. Olaf College for two years and then went to Fairview Hospital School of Nursing. During that time, on a blind date, she met her future husband, Hans Johnson, who was attending law school at the nearby University of Minnesota. They were married and moved to Denver, Colorado, where they raised their family. She was always busy with church, including teaching Sunday school, Sacred Dance, as well as a parish nurse. She was involved in Boy Scouts and in Girl Scouts while her children were in those activities. She was always busy helping her family, the church and her community. When the children entered elementary school, she went back for a BA in psychology from Loretta Heights College. She was a school nurse in the Cherry Creek school district. After her children were all graduated from college, she received a school nurse practitioner certificate from the University of Colorado. This was one of the first nurse practitioner programs in the country, and she used that degree in her career with the District. She was very proud of creating an emergency response and tornado logo for the school district, which was copyrighted and requested for use throughout the country. She was a supportive wife to her husband of 66 years. Hans and Gladys traveled extensively, crossing the Atlantic 27 times, and going around the world twice. Gladys was the genealogy expert in the family and had first-degree relatives in Norway. They went to Norway many times, to visit family on both sides, as well as gathering information for 17 generations back. They lived in Denver for 55 years. They were only eight houses from their son Stan (Marge) Johnson and two grandchildren. In 2007, they moved to Spokane to be closer to their daughter, Sharon (Ken) and their other two grandchildren. She has now gone to Heaven where she is joins her parents (Oystein and Gjertine Hjortedal), her brother, (Erling Hjortedal) and two of her sons (Bruce and Steve). She is survived by her husband, Hans Johnson, son Stan (Marge) Johnson, daughter Sharon (Ken) Cathcart, four grandchildren, Steven and Gretchen Cathcart, Julia (Nate) Johnson, Andrea (Chris) Piepho, and four great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Ethan Johnson, Cora and Henry Piepho, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Memorial service at Fairwood Retirement Village dining room on January 12 at 12:30 pm. Donations can be made to Steven Hans Johnson Scholarship Fund at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.
