SCARPELLI, Nicholas P.

Passed away February 4, 2011 in Spokane. He was born August 22, 1923 the son of Gaspero and Rosina (Lapano) Scarpelli. Nick graduated from Gonzaga High School in 1942. His Gonzaga University education was interrupted by World War II, in which he served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Nick's remarkable teaching and coaching career included 3 years in Okanogan, 17 years in School District 81, and 28 years at Gonzaga Prep. He also officiated Pac-8, Pac-10, and other college football games for 15 years, as well as Inland Empire basketball. Among his many honors, Nick was awarded the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal, from Gonzaga Prep, for outstanding service to secondary education. He was inducted into the Inland Empire Basketball Officials Hall of Fame, and into the Washington State Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. The young people Nick taught and coached were most important to him. His strong, gentle, and nurturing manner enriched and influenced many. Nick is survived by Mary, his loving wife and lifelong partner of 67years; Nick's greatest pleasure was to be by her side. He is also survived by his children, Rose Mary Diedrick of Sammamish, WA, Nick Scarpelli Jr. of Seattle, WA, Kathleen Scarpelli of Seattle, WA, Michael (Mima) Scarpelli of Spokane and Julie Ann (David Levin) Scarpelli of Oakland, CA; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Virginia Scarpelli in December, 2010. Visitation will be Thursday, February 10, 2011 from 12-5pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 11, 2011 at 1pm and will be celebrated at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 303 E. Boone, Spokane with private interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Nick and Mary Scarpelli Scholarship Fund c/o Gonzaga Prep 1224 E.
