News Death Notice

SMITH, William "Bill" Franklin 93 on the 26th day of November his life's journey ended here on earth, just 3 days before his 94th birthday, after a month of failing health. He is now at peace. Bill was born November 29, 1919 in Springfield, Ohio the son of Amasa T. and Lulu S. (Blackman) Smith. Bill served his country in the United States Army during World War II; where he participated in 5 invasions, North Africa, Scilly, Salarno, Anzio & Southern France. He was awarded; a Silver Star for five major battles, four Bronze Stars for four additional battles, Bronze Arrowhead for spearheading five invasions, Purple Heart for wounds on Anzio Beachhead, plus other medals. He retired from Howard Paper Mill in 1984 with 40 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and wood working. Bill was a member of Hillside Ave. Church of God, Springfield. Also a member of the VFW Post 5451, Urbana, Pearce-Kerns American Legion Post 120, Urbana, DAV Chapter 31 Urbana, Anzio Beachhead Veterans of WWII and the military order of the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Jeannine T. (Wingfield) Smith; daughter, Linda (Rich) Richmond of Enon, his granddaughters, Lynda Rene Zonner and Michelle Lea Wheeler, his great grandchildren, Austin, Jake, Emma, Alex, Bailey and Adam, a daughter-in-law, Vickie Smith of Clifton; stepchildren, Vickie (Steve) Smith, Aaron (Patty) Thomas and Jill Thomas, 7 step grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren; his brothers, Adam H. Smith of Davison, Michigan, Charles E. Smith of Owosso, Michigan as well as numerous nieces and nephews of several generations. He is preceded in death by his parents, his 1st wife of 49 years, Mary Louise Smith, a son, Richard Lee Smith; his brothers, Tommy and James W. Smith and his sisters, Beulah Francis Nogle and Thelma Marie Stanley. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in funeral home with Pastor Michael Criner officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, West Liberty with military honors provided by the Pearce-Kerns American Legion Post 120, Urbana.
