passed away Dec. 24, 2015 in Hemingway, SC. Funeral services Jan. 2, 9 am, at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Ave. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. He was a 1967 graduate of Benjamin E. Mays High School in Miami, where he excelled in academics and football at NC A&T. Melvin majored in business with a minor in accounting. He graduated in 1971 with academic honors-cum laude. In 1971, Melvin Holmes was drafted as an offensive lineman in the 5th round to the Pittsburg Steelers from 1971-1973. He joined the newly formed United States Football League (USFL) played from 1974-1976. He retired from the NFL in 1976. His professional career, after football, included serving as a financial analyst for a bank and The Dpt. of Commerce, entrepreneur/owner of a Burger King franchise, a chocolate chip cookie business and a seafood market 1977-1986. He also served as a Coordinator of Student Programs for Veterans of Upward Bound at Dade Community College. He married Joan Bradley Holmes, his college sweetheart, in Dec. 1971 in Muncie, IN. Survived by his wife, Dr. Joan B. Holmes; daughter, Tara Holmes Gibson (Harrington); son, Melvin Bradley Holmes (Lisa); granddaughters, Taylor Junea Gibson and Alexandria Brooklyn Gibson.
