Dear Lisa,

I mentioned Tom's name today when I was at Longhorn Steakhouse and I was informed that Tom had passed away. I was so surprised and saddened. I was the Health Inspector that helped him open his restaurant. I really liked Tom, and liked eating at his restaurant. He treated me more like a friend that an inspector. I had a great appreciation for him and we became buddies When I was laid off by Jeb Bush; I went by to tell Tom and he picked me up and hugged me. I am not a small person either. I will never forget that. He had a great love for his children. He told me about them the first time I met him. I will certainly miss him. I truly hope that you are in peace and your children are well.

Dear Lisa,

I only learned today of Tom's passing. Seems like yesterday that we were at Cornell together. May God provide you and your boys strength as you move forward. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear McHale Family - words cannot express how my heart yearns to swallow your grief. Tom was such a special person. Margie, Tom and I grew up together in Montgomery Village. I was a Digging Road person that encroached on the Breckenridge folks for a while. He was one of my first "boyfriends" in adolesence. He was such a classy gentleman even as a young man. Though we lost touch over the years, his smile, kindness, and easy confidence are still etched in my memory. I wish Tom the Lord's eternal peace, and I wish all of Tom's family the Lord's comfort and grace.

As I remember Tom, I think about all our long conversations; mostly about cooking and food which led Tom and I wanting to eat and Mark into a state of boredom. Tom always made you feel at home, and I will never forget him. Lisa- I can only imagine how painful this must be for you and the kids.However, in time there will be a silver lining. Thanks to you both for being part of my life. Tammy

May 30, 2008

Hi Lisa and Family,
My sons Michael and Chris worked for Tom and that is how I first met Tom. Thus we became friends and he would stop by the house to just sit and chill out a little. He indeed was a gentile giant and a good friend, as my son Michael said recently talking to his friend Brad that Tom knew a thousand people and had a thousand best friends is the best I can sum it up. I pray for the McHale family in this time of great sorrow. He was more of a son to me, as he acted like an older brother to my son and advised him well. The world was a better place because of him.
Love from the Mike Moschkin Sr. and family

Dear Family,
We met Tom last year and just enjoyed being with him, talking and laughing and "serious" talks, too!!! We are so very sad for the loss of such a wonderful man. He was the "gentle" giant; and for many a supportive friend. God be with Tom's family. I know that Tom is now "at peace" with his "Higher Power"!!!

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

So very many years have gone by since we've seen one another, but you have always remained in my heart, thoughts, and prayers as such a wonderful, first best-friend. I will pray for you and your family, that the Lord will give you strength and wrap you in His love.

From the sillyness of boys, to the sweat we shared on the field of play, to the seriousness of boys becoming men. Each of the three "S' bring about fond memories that I shared with Tom over the years. Time spent on Breckenridge playing as we would, miscevious at times, but always being boys. To tee ball, to south park, to GHS, honing our skills to becoming better athletes. Sharing our joy as well as our failures. To finally becoming men, sharing thoughts and feelings about the world, our interests, business affairs and families. These are some of the many things that race through my mind only wishing their was more to come. To all who knew him we all feel a deep loss. You knew when you were in the arms of Tom as he hoisted you up high.
To Lisa and the boys to Joan, Jim,Mary, Nora, and Marge our thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

May God continue to comfort you, the boys and your family. Lucy, Joe, Connor & Caroline Patsko

The McHale family. There are not words here for me to express how deeply sorrowed I am. I grew up with Tommy in good ole' Montgomery Village. Life was incredible for us kids in Whetstone, we were so blessed and even more blessed to have each other and our families. What fun we had playing sports together on "our field" for endless days that turned into years. After Gburg HS we went on to UM together. Was so proud of him when he made it w/ the Bucs, etc. We kept in touch through out the years and he will surely be missed. God bless your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

May 27, 2008

Dear Lisa and family,
It's been quite some time since our days at Cornell and since we've been in touch. This is certainly not the way I'd hope to reconnect, but please know the Kraus family is thinking of you. Tom was a treasure, always smiling and spreading happiness to the people around him, but you are the one who gave him joy in return. I remember the way he looked at you as you walked down the aisle, and how I hoped to someday find someone who would look at me with such love and adoration. There are no words for how sorry I am for your loss. Be well.

I was so sad to hear about Tom's passing. I worked with him about 10 years ago and I still have fond memories of him. He was incredibly kind, gentle, and warm - all tucked in that big body. He was a great person to work for and always had a smile. I still think of him when I hear Stevie Ray Vaughn and if I get a change to eat some good North Carolina BBQ! I know he deeply loved his family and I extend my condolences to you all.

We knew Tom when our son worked for him in the restaurants, and we had many things in common (such as being from suburban Maryland). My words echo so many of those in this book -- how kind, generous, caring, friendly, and honest Tom was. I haven't met such a stand-up guy in a long time. What a loss to so many.

This is a very sad day for our family. I can't imagine how sad it is for you -- his wife, children, parents, brothers and sisters, and all of his friends in so many places. May God bless you all and keep you safe.

Tom,

You were always the gentle giant with the big smile. I always made sure to have a set of Redskins tickets every time you came back home just to see you play. The last organized sport Tom and I played together was when Tom played on my softball team during the draft , last at bat before getting the “call” was a shot over the fence and the road at Summit Hall Ball Park (320 plus feet) I said to myself wow we are going to miss him in the line-up. Now, we all are truly going to miss him. God bless to Tom and the family.

Lisa, words can not express how I feel right now. One thing that comes to mind is our experiences off the field. When I went into labor with my son who weighed 1 lb. and struggled to survive you were pregnant with TJ and also went into labor early. I came to the house with clothes from my son and they fit TJ perfectly. I remember Tom was so thankful and glad you had someone who knew exactly how you were feeling. But we always kept our heads up and encouraged eachother and now your young man is here to share with you the love of his father along with your other sons. Lisa if you ever need to talk, you let me know, it dosen't matter the hour. Jill has all my information and Lord knows I would be there in a second. Keep your hand in God's unchanging hand. I will pray for you and the entire McHale family. Love Ya!

I met Tom because of his restaurants where I was fortunate enough to get to know him a little.
People probably don't know that he was a BIG music fan, especially blues, and old rhythm and blues.
When he found out that I had been a musician,he asked me to make him CDs of old blues songs, and when I would come in, I would hear them being played over the restaurants sound system.
I was at lunch last Friday with two former associates, and Tom's name came up.
The topic centered around how when Tom shook your hand, you know that the deal was solid, and you knew that his word was gold.
Tom leaves a LOT of good memories, to a lot of people.
I'll miss you Tom..............Peace

Lisa and the Boys,
We are all so sadden and shocked over Tom's passing. The world has lost a wonderful man. I think alot about the days we spent together and all the dinners and laughs we had when you two were in Ithaca and I cherish those days. I had the distinct pleasure to watch you play Tom. I also had the even more gratifying experience of knowing you. Whether we were talking about history or the Redskins woeful choke to the Giants in week three, I always felt that you cared what I thought. It was humbling that a man I watched play as a kid, cared about what I had to say. But that was just the way Tom was. Tom loved people, most of all he loved his family. I know that my entire family sends our thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

Lisa, T.J., Michael and Matthew…words cannot express how saddened we are at the loss of Tom. Our memories of Tom have been flooding through our heads all morning. All the good times we had as friends at all the parties and bar-b-ques…all the delicious meals we had at the restaurants…you and Tom giving Steve and his band their first “break” and inviting them to play at your New Year’s Eve Party…I will never forget Steve learning to play “Cold Shot” for the number one Stevie Ray Vaughn fan and Tom walking out from the kitchen and purely enjoying the music. Steve still plays that song today and it will forever be special to him. Tom was a gentle giant whose kindness poured from him. He always took charge of the food at our Christmas parties and made sure everything was at the right temperature, nothing had been sitting out too long and made it his personal mission to make sure everyone enjoyed the food and was having a good time. He was passionate about his family, friends and always made us feel welcome at your home and the restaurant. Lisa, you are one of the strongest people I have ever known…I’ve always admired you from afar at your strength with T.J. during the tough times…you amazed me. I know very hard days lay ahead for you and the boys and that your strength, your faith and your family and friends will help you and the boys. I think of Tom and know the world has lost a treasure…how I wish I could sit down with him right now and have a Salmon Chipotle Wrap…Marsha, Steve, Taylor, Sarah and Nick
