Volf Roitman Obituary

ROITMAN, Volf The sculptor and painter, poet, novelist, prize-winning dramatist, cineaste and ludico trickster Volf Roitman was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and grew up in Buenos Aires, where he received a degree in architecture. In 1951, he moved to Paris where he joined the Madi art movement, which he promoted internationally. With his wife of 47 years, Shelley Goodman, he was active in French cinema as a producer, distributor and owner of an art house theatre. The two attended the Cannes Film Festival and travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. Besides Paris, they lived on the Riviera, in Barcelona and in West Cork, Ireland. In the 80s, Volf returned to the visual arts. He quickly became known for 3-dimensional laser cut works in paper and metal. His sculpture pieces were shown in over 150 exhibits, and are in the collections of museums around the world. He is best known for using his metal panels to transform ordinary buildings - the Madi Museum in Dallas, the Marshall Wall - into magnificent sculpture pieces. He is also the founder of the Ludico Revolution art movement. Retrospectives of Volf's life work are presently at the Univ. of Florence, Italy and, during the month of May, at the Leepa Rattner in Tarpon Springs, and the Frost Museum in Miami. The inconsolables this great man leaves behind are his wife Shelley of Holiday; daughter Scarlett Roitman; granddaughters Clarissa, Eloise and Anais and son-in-law Mark Lenherr, all of London; step children Lorenne, Katia and Laurence Rio; step-grandchildren Rebecca, Alice, Tatiana, Samantha, and Stanislas, all of Paris; sister-in-love Anna and Edmund Wood of Marshall, TX; nephew Odysseus Chairetakis and sister-in-law Catherine and Francois Wolman of L.A.; cousins Judy and Larry Ikels of Washington D.C.; in Buenos Aires Marta, Eduardo, Ana, Nuria, Eduardito, Bruno, Gabriel, and Graciela Roitman; in Netanya, Israel; cousins Dr. Alex and Mary Roitman and in Madrid, his oldest and closest friend Dr. Nicolas Spiro and Marta.
