Emily Joye Chalker Wachtel, 88, passed away on September 4, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Born on August 20, 1930, Emily Joye was the first child born to Bertae Mae and Lorenzo Mason Chalker. She was raised in Pensacola and graduated from Pensacola High in 1948. She then attended the Carraway Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Birmingham and graduated in 1951 as a Registered Nurse. She began serving as a US Navy nurse in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954 as a LTJG. She met her future husband, John Henry Wachtel while he was serving as a flight instructor at Pensacola NAS in 1954.

Emily Joye and John grew their family as they traveled to various duty stations. She was a devoted wife, mother, and a fabulous cook. No one ever left her kitchen hungry! She loved breeding and training German Shepherds, and was active in the show dog circuit. After many years of raising her children she returned to her nursing career and worked at Santa Rosa Hospital and Pensacola Naval Hospital. Joye then spent many years enjoying her family and relaxing at their home on the Blackwater River.

In addition to her parents, Emily Joye was preceded in death by her beloved son, John Christopher; her cherished husband, John; and her sister, Wanda Jacqueline Michael.

Joye leaves to cherish her memory her devoted children Lisa Kozak (Dennis), Judy Robinson (John), and Michael Wachtel; her grandchildren, Eric, Chris and Brian (Kim) Kozak; Erin Wachtel Stubbs (Joseph) and Taylor Wachtel; Daryl, Jeff and Emily Robinson; Ella Grace and John Michael Wachtel; and her great grandchild Mason James Robinson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 10, 2018, at Lewis Funeral Home in Milton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milton, followed by interment with Military Honors at Barrancas National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the entire staff at The Haven of Our Lady of Peace nursing facility for the loving care and compassion they provided to our Mother and to our family.
