The Haitian Community will also have a special place in my heart. 25 yrs ago while I was in graduate school for education, the director of family services for the district I NOW work for contacted me to work at the the HCC and represent the district I now work for as the overall tutor supervisor to their after school program. Emilio Revolus, the founder of the Haitian Community Center of Stamford where I was assigned, was a very formal man. He always wore a suit and hat. I heard he was a lawyer in Haiti and came here as an immigrant. He wanted to help his fellow countrymen on their journey here since he couldn't practice law here.Today I was at the post office and the postal worker was Haitian. I asked him and we realized I was THERE when his children attended the center. I actually have a picture of me and his children. He told me Emilio helped him & his family 25 yrs ago when they arrived here from Haiti, and he now is a postal worker behind the desk and his children I tutored went to college. My tears of joy turned to sadness. He then informed me about Emilio. THANK YOU, Emilio, for welcoming me into your community and celebrating Haitian Flag Day on May 18th with me! I learned so much about the culture. I so still remember the day the kids thought David was Puerto Rican because he was light skinned. Phoebe had a talk with the students and then they asked if I was Haitian. I did get a chuckle from their openness. RIP, Emilio. You're the immigrant that should be rewarded. You sacrificed your career in Haiti to come here & you dedicated your life to help others on the same journey as you. It's sad that COVID-19 took your life. Rete anpe, Emilio!
