Charles Hickey Obituary

Charles J. Hickey
Charles J. Hickey, 94, of Stamford, Connecticut, and Singer Island, Florida, passed away at Stamford Hospital on Friday, April 27, 2018.
Born on June 12, 1923 to Charles and Betty Hickey, Charlie grew up in New Britain, CT and graduated from Yale College in 1947 and Yale Law School in 1950. He joined the US Army in 1942, served in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. On August 27, 1960, he married Mary Lucille Nebbia. They lived in New York City and Chappaqua, NY, before ultimately settling in Toledo, Ohio, where they resided for forty-two years.
Charlie was a tax attorney and Certified Public Accountant who spent most of his career working for multi-national corporations including Westvaco and Owens-Illinois. He was on the Owens-Illinois team sent to Venezuela to negotiate the release of William F. Niehous, a senior O-I executive who was kidnapped by Venezuelan rebels. In later years, he taught tax law and business planning at Fordham University and Ohio Northern University, where he greatly enjoyed his interactions with students in the graduate school environment.
Charlie's global perspective served as an inspiration to both his students and his family. Traveling the world extensively on business, he instilled a love of travel in his family with whom he shared adventures both abroad and closer to home. A proud Yalie, he remained connected with the University through his son and his three grandchildren, all of whom also attended Yale.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Mary, his son, Stephen P. Hickey; his grandchildren, Lauren, Alexander and Georgina; his sister Betty-Ann McGeehan; his niece Lee and his nephews Brad, Bruce and Chris. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Brandon J. Hickey and his sister, Jean Berkeley.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 3 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT(203)-359-9999. I worked for Charlie as Manager of Natural Resource Taxes in 1975-1980. He taught me about timber and other tax situations. We did much to help OI settle tax issues in timber and other taxation. Charlie became a mentor of mine. While I had a masters in Economics he insisted I needed the MBA ticket for my career. I was reluctant to go back to school and spend the time away from my family. After much back and forth Charlie found the Program for Management Development at Harvard and sponsored me as OIs candidate. It worked for my career as I was later chosen out of a pool of fifty people to become Great Northerns Manage of Business Development and fast tract for a Division President.
Charlie worked the Bejesus out of me but we understood each other and had a great working relationship.

Im glad he had a long life and his family had the opportunity to share their time with him.

He was one of my life heroes!!

These young men of our "Greatest Generation" went off to war to fight for freedom for those in peril. They were the bravest of the brave and the true heroes in this world. Thank you for serving our country.
