Green, Jr, Alfred
Alfred E. Green, Jr., 90, son of Viola & Alfred E Green Sr., predeceased by siblings Dorothy Wildman, William Green and Raymond Green. Born October 27, 1922, Al graduated Stamford High School in 1940, after graduating he took an apprenticeship at Yale & Towne Locks Manufacturing Company as a Tool & Die maker. After being drafted into the United States Army in 1943, Al was placed in the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion, Company D, where he served as a mortar gunner and volunteered for glider missions. Al was wounded by enemy mortar fire in twenty four places in Zellenberg, France on December 5, 1944 where he was awarded The Purple Heart, after which he became a member of the Order of The Purple Heart. He was evacuated to a hospital in Paris, France and later moved to hospital in England and was eventually sent home to the States to finish his rehab where he made a full recovery and was honorably discharged on June 16, 1945. Upon his return home to Connecticut, Al finished his apprenticeship at Yale & Towne in 1945, he continued working for Sara Lee, General Electric, and Omega Engineering before his retirement in 1999. Alfred married Helen Meehan in 1947 and had two children; Elaine Fanwick and Alfred "Skip" Green III and two grandchildren; Jennifer Warner and Justin Green. Al remained a Stamford resident until 2001 where he then moved to Newtown, CT. On May 8, 2012 Alfred was awarded France's highest military honor, Order de la Legion d'honneur, for his efforts in liberating France. Al passed peacefully at home on December 8, 2012 surrounded by his loved ones. Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, CT on Wednesday December 12, 2012 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. The family requests that everyone meet at St. John's RC Cemetery, Camp Ave., Darien, CT for a graveside service on Thursday December 13, 2012 at 10:30AM.
