Notice Condolences

Sylvia Gladstone
Sylvia Gladstone, longtime Stamford resident, died October 18, 2017 at the Stamford Hospital where she had received outstanding care over a period of 25 years. She was born Sylvia Iris Rosenberg on October 5, 1925, the eldest of three children of Mollie (Kessler) and Samuel Rosenberg of Malden, Massachusetts.
After completing high school she attended secretarial school, a common educational path for young women of her time. At the end of World War II, she volunteered at a Jewish community center for active GIs where she met and then married Herbert Gladstone, who predeceased her in 2015 after 68 years of a most enviable marriage. Their relationship was marked by mutual devotion, love of extended family, active social connections and community service. Sylvia shared her kindness and respect with all kinds of people. She loved being a mother which she always spoke of as her greatest joy. She and Herb had three children: Alan, who married Wendy Rossi, Linda, who married Gerry Menees, and Karen. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren expanded Sylvia and Herb's happiness further.
She was well known for the delight she experienced entertaining in her home with warm hospitality and wonderful cooking; a treasured household possession was the large table where many friends and family members gathered over the decades. For many years she worked at the Davenport Ridge School, where she loved nurturing staff and children who passed through the front office and where she put her secretarial and people skills to much appreciated use. Her most dedicated community work was at Temple Sinai where she was an active member of the Sisterhood and a participant in the choir.
A service celebrating her life will take place at Temple Sinai at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 22. All are welcome to attend to help us remember this sweet and loving person.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to Temple Sinai in Stamford: https://www.templesinaistamford.org/ .
