Moten, Pearl
Pearl Bowen-Butler Moten, of Norwalk, CT., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, after a long illness. She was born May 6, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Clifford D. Bowen, Sr. and Matilda Bowen. Pearl was raised in Stamford, attended public school and graduated from Stamford High School. She also graduated from the New York School of Business. In 1975, Pearl retired from the State of CT Department of Motor Vehicles, where she was employed for 27 years and the first African American hired. At the time of her retirement she was the Assistant Manager. A few months later, she became a seasonal employee with H&R Block for 14 years as Quality Control Supervisor. Pearl joined the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World, where she was an active member in Phyllis Wheatley Temple No. 179 of Stamford, CT in 1958. A few years later she moved up the line, joined the New England States and Eastern Canada Division. Here she was elected as Financial Secretary and stepped down from that position after serving 37 years in 2009. Mrs. Moten was a lifelong member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Stamford. She was the mother of Mrs. Sandra D. Hunter, Stamford, CT and Mrs. Cheryl R. Upchurch (Donald), Raleigh, N.C., grandmother of three, Ronald, Leonard and Clifford Hunter, and great-grandmother to Miss Aleahya Hunter. Pearl was predeceased by her husband Richard Moten, sister Ruth B. Pinn and brother Clifford D. Bowen Jr. Visitation will take place on Monday, February 18, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a service of celebration at 7:00 PM at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 150 Fairfield Avenue, Stamford, CT with Reverend LeRoy Ladson, Jr. officiating. Interment will take place on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM atWillowbrook Cemetery, Westport, CT.
