Catherine Lyman Obituary

Catherine Ann Lyman, 79, died on July 17 in Philadelphia after a long illness.

Ms. Lyman was originally from Hazleton, where she taught at Green Street School early in her career. She also taught English at Weatherly High School. Ms. Lyman relocated to Philadelphia, but frequently visited her family and friends in Hazleton.

Ms. Lyman was the daughter of the late Cletus M. and Anita B. Lyman, Hazleton. She was educated at St. Gabriel Elementary and High School. She received her B.A. with a major in English from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, Purchase, NY, in 1962.

Ms. Lyman studied post-college at Fordham University, New York City; Marywood College, Scranton; Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland; University of the Arts; and Villanova University. Cathy received a master's degree in education from Marywood.

Ms. Lyman spent most of her career teaching and counseling in the Philadelphia public school system and at Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia.

Ms. Lyman was preceded in death by her sister, Rosemary L. (Joseph) Umbriac, Hazleton, and is survived by her sister, Alice J. Lyman; and her brother, Cletus P. Lyman, both of Philadelphia; and niece, Mae Umbriac (Andrew Tubley); grandniece, Alice Tubley; and grandnephew, Joseph Tubley, all of San Francisco.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick Church, Philadelphia, on July 23, and she was buried in St. Gabriel cemetery. The mass was recorded and is available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/channel/UCfD3B27Ec58IY3NTolvZ6kQ.

Cathy loved animals, and she had a particular liking for cats. Instead of flowers, friends are asked to donate to University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital.
