Joseph A. Shimukonas Obituary

Joseph A. Shimukonas of Barnesville passed away peacefully Tuesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

Raised in Gilberton, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Anna Shimukonas (Gawley).

Joseph, known as "Shimmy" by his friends, lived a full life. He was an avid woodworker, outdoorsman and devoted family man. At the age of 13 he was crowned champion of the Schuylkill County Soap Box Derby, beating the competition with a car handcrafted by Joe and his father.

Shortly after graduating from Gilberton High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as an ordnanceman aboard the USS Enterprise. After four years of honorable service, Joe returned to Pennsylvania where he met his wife, the late Dolores Shimukonas (Fritz), and remained happily married until her death in 2010.

Joe worked as a maintenance technician for Atlas Powder Co./ICI Chemical for more than 25 years and served his community as both a Ryan Twp. police officer and volunteer firefighter for the Ryan Twp. Fire Department, where he held the position of trustee and brought home numerous awards as captain of the Marching Unit.

Joe is survived by four daughters, Kim Shimukonas, Barnesville; Karen Cash, Barnesville; Kris Hoptley and her husband, Steve, Reading; and Kelly Evangelista and her husband, Mario, Las Vegas, Nev.

Being an enthusiastic sports fan and dedicated family man, it was no surprise to see him alongside one of his daughters rooting on the Golden Bears at a Mahanoy Area sporting event.

Joe is also survived by a grandson, Zachary Cash; three great-grandchildren, Neia, Naivyn and Natalia; brother, Anthony Shimukonas, Barnesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Dolores, he was preceded in death by his sister, Theresa Yashinsky; and a brother, Edward Shimukonas.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. in Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown.

Interment will be in Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
