James J. Kaschak Obituary

James J. Kaschak, 83, of Hazleton passed away Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late John and Susan (Pavlick) Kaschak. He was a member the Parish of Ss. Cyril & Methodius at the Church of St. Joseph, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society.

A veteran of both the Army and Navy while in the Army National Guard, he served in the military police when discharged he enlisted in the U.S. Navy last aboard the USS Eaton attaining the rank of EMP3.

Prior to retiring, he was a machinist at Dorr Oliver and last worked in the Maintenance Dept. of St. Joseph Church.

James was a lifetime member of the 14th Ward Fire Co. #5, where he was a relief delegate for a number of years and held various position in the company over the years.

Jim was always a hard-working and honest man. Devoted to both his faith and his family, he enjoyed attending church services and family events as well as spending time with his childhood friend, Andrew Gombeda. While his health declined in recent years, he never lost faith in his religion or his family. His visits with his wife, children, grandchildren, relatives and friends were the highlight of his days. Sneaking treats to the family dogs was especially enjoyable to Jim. While his family and friends will miss him dearly, they know he is at peace with his best friend, Jesus.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas; and a sister, Helen Mattey; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Citro; children, James Kaschak and his wife, Karen, West Hazleton; Gary Kaschak and his wife, Amy, York; and Denise Kaschak, Hazleton; seven grandchildren, Christian, Amanda, Caroline, Jonathan, Morgan, Kyle and Rebecca Kaschak; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., Hazleton, and are being held privately due to COVID-19 safety precautions for family and friends.

Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
