Mary M. Ferry

Mary M. Ferry Obituary

Mary M. Ferry, 87, passed away Tuesday at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Eckley, she was the daughter of the late John and Susan (Pavlovich) Matisak. She was a graduate of Foster Twp. High School.

Mary, alongside her husband, Maurice, owned and operated Ferry's Drug Store for 33 years and, later, had been a teacher's aide at Drums Elementary School.

She was a former member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Freeland, and participated in the choir and the Altar and Rosary Society, and was a current member of  Immaculate Conception Parish at St. Ann's Church, Freeland.

In her early years, she was involved in the Bishop Hafey Mother's Club, St. Mary's P.T. Guild, and helped raise funds for the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. Mary went door to door collecting donations for Freeland's first ambulance and worked at their membership drives for many years. She also assisted with Freeland's food distribution, F.A.S.T. and Eckley Miners Village.

Mary loved concerts, Broadway shows, crosswords, reading and travel. Loving her children and grandchildren as much as she did, she often traveled to New Jersey and Vermont to visit. In 1976, Mary and her daughter, Marybeth, traveled to England, France, Switzerland and Italy, where they were blessed by Pope Paul VI at his summer residence, Castle Gandolfo, in the Lazio region of Rome.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Maurice; a son, Sean; brothers, Thomas and John; and sisters, Martha Voyda, Betty Angelo and Joanne Mullen.

Surviving are a son, Reese Ferry and wife, Cydna, Vermont; daughters, Susan Ferry, Freeland; Marybeth Ferry, Bloomsburg; brothers, Joseph Matisak and wife, Cathy, Alabama; Edward Matisak, Sugarloaf Twp.; a brother-in-law, Joseph Angelo, Prospect Park; and a sister-in-law, Rita Matisak, Hazleton. Also surviving are grandchildren, Christian Bradock, Sarah Ferry, Kathryn Ferry and William Ferry; a great-grandchild, Ella Bradock; and many nieces and nephews.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Mass of Christian Burial and the celebration of Mary's life will be held at a future date.

Burial will be with her husband in St. Ann's Cemetery, Freeland.

McHugh-Wilczek Funeral Home, 249 Centre St., Freeland, is in charge of arrangements.
