Francis Massage Obituary

Francis Massage, a resident of New Coxeville, died Saturday.

Born in Hazleton on May 25, 1922, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Mishishin) Massage, Beaver Meadows. Francis was married for 48 years to the late Kathleen (Veglia) Massage.

He was a lifelong member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Beaver Meadows. Both he and his wife, Kathleen, sang in the church's illustrious choir, as well as several other choirs throughout the area.

Before retiring, he was employed at Dorr-Oliver Inc. for 35 years. Francis was affiliated with the U.S. Forestry Service as a fire tower ranger and member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, New Mexico.

During World War II, he served as a petty officer first class aboard the USS Republic in the U.S. Navy. He saw action throughout the Pacific Theater, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, and survived the infamous Typhoon Heidi during that period. He also served several tours of duty in Australia. His decorations include the American Campaign, Asia-Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory and Navy Good Conduct medals.

He was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8225, Beaver Meadows, and served as senior vice commander. He was also a member of American Legion PA Post 0383.

Francis was a well-known championship coach for the Beaver-Banks Little League, including several District 18 all-star teams. He was an avid bowler and gardener. He was a "Big Kidder," enjoyed big band swing music and could always dance up a storm with the best. Besides his devotion as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, his greatest passions were his family cross-country road tripping and his lifelong devotion as a Detroit Tigers baseball fan.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were his daughter, Anni B. (Massage) Reinhart; and daughter, Christine (Massage) Bettine.

Surviving family members are his daughter, Nadia K. Massage, Pittston; son, David F. Massage and wife, Patricia, Chenango Forks, N.Y.; son, James M. Massage and wife, Victoria, Sheshequin Twp.; and grandchildren, Angela Massage and Davey Massage Jr.

Due to current restrictions, his burial was held privately in Ss. Peter and Paul B.C. Cemetery, Beaver Meadows.

Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton, is in charge of the arrangements.
