Ralph "Sonny" Gabriel Obituary

Ralph "Sonny" Gabriel died peacefully and suddenly Wednesday.

He was born in Hazleton on May 13, 1940, and was preceded in death by his father Ralph and his mother Evelyn Daubert Gabriel.

Sonny graduated from Hazleton High School, Class of 1958. After graduation, he started his career in the garment industry with his many years at the McAdoo Manufacturing Plant. There he held numerous managerial positions and titles. He then went on to become a territory manager for J.T. General Store in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

It was Sonny's outgoing and generous nature that made this his true calling. Sonny won numerous awards, including Rookie Salesperson of the Year in 1991, and many Heritage Awards for Outstanding Sales and Achievement throughout his 25-year career at J.T.'s.

Sonny was always an avid indoor and outdoor sportsman, starting with his days at Most Precious Blood Elementary School through his high school days at HHS and beyond. He was a walking encyclopedia about his beloved New York Yankees and Penn State Nittany Lions. One of his favorite recent pastimes was the trivia games he would play with his friends and family at P.J. Whelihan's in Lehighton, always testing his knowledge and skill.

A superior hunter in his day, his recent passion for outdoor sports was testing his sharpshooter skills with clay pigeon shooting on Sundays with his local shooting buddies.

Having a keen eye for detail, his other passion was working on numerous indoor and outdoor projects at his home that were always in the works.

He is survived by his four brothers, Joseph (Marlene), Gerald (Sandra), Richard (Anne) and Jimmy (Megan); nephews and nieces, Joe, Gino, Nicole, Melanie and Jeffrey; along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends, too many to mention.

He loved his life, his family and his friends. He will be missed by all who were lucky to have met him.

A special gathering will be held at a later date to allow friends and family to celebrate his life, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
