Elizabeth "Betty" Kathryn Tomasko passed away Tuesday. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., on Dec 11, 1929, she was the daughter of the late the Rev. Irving J. Shafer and Mary K. Miller Shafer. Betty attended schools in Elmira, N.Y., and graduated from Weatherly High School in 1948. She worked in Tung-Sol, Weatherly, and later was a nurse's aide at General Hospital, Stroudsburg, in pediatrics for six years. Her most rewarding job was as a paraprofessional aide in Pleasant Valley High School, Brodheadsville, with students with special needs for 13 years. She was of the Presbyterian faith, having been an elder and trustee of Hazleton First Presbyterian Church. She was a past member of the Glen Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 425, Lykens. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Friendship Club and Flower Club, Weatherly. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2015. Betty had two sons, John R. Tomasko and his companion, Joanne Kennedy, York; Ronald J. and wife, Arla Tomasko, Mountain Top; grandchildren, Tara Tomasko, Philadelphia; Trisha Tomasko, Duryea; and Hayden and wife, Brianna Yerashunas, Baltimore Md.; and great-grandson, Paxton Tomasko, Albany, N.Y. Pending arrangements are entrusted to Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 211 First St., Weatherly. A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held at a later time.
