Sanford Barcus Obituary

BARCUS, SANFORD LOUIS

Age 101, of Chandler, AZ, passed away July 26, 2013. He was born in Elmira, NY on April 28, 1912, the son of Benjamin Barcus and Esther Yudkovsky Barcus. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy (1930), from Bucknell University (1934) and earned a Master's Degree from Elmira College (1962). He achieved the rank of full Colonel in the U.S. Army, training at the General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and was injured in the Pacific theater during the Second World War. Serving his country proudly, he remained in the Reserves after WWII. He met his beloved wife Nanette after her graduation from Vassar. He was the Director of Guidance and Classification at the Elmira Correctional Facility for 28 years. A born entrepreneur and investor, he also did commercial property management in Elmira. He was a lifelong congregant of Temple B'Nai Israel in Elmira and a member of Temple Emmanuel in Tempe, AZ. He taught Hebrew to a generation of students at the Temple and was a longtime member of the Cooley and Cashmere Grotto lodges. Rarely missing a Friday night, he was always well-dressed at Temple where he was known and loved by the congregation. He will be remembered most for his deep commitment to his parents, wife, children and grandchildren. He was interested in genealogy, family history, military history, baseball, and charitable giving. He supported many in need and did not hesitate to seek them out. A great writer, he enjoyed correspondences with many family and friends throughout the world. He loved the family home at 602 Foster Ave. that he resided in until his move to Arizona in 1999. The grounds maintenance was a passion of his, and he liked to carry vegetables from his garden to all the neighbors. The stock market was another passion, and he followed the daily Wall Street Journal and CNBC for all his investment news. In recent years he learned to use the computer. He outlived most of his contemporaries. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nanette Chaitt Barcus; predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Barcus Lavine; survived by his three children, Steven (Diana) of Sanford, FL, Carolyn Boles (Donald, MD) of Tempe, AZ and Robert of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren, Donald Boles III of Tempe, AZ and Jennifer Boles of San Diego, CA; two nephews, Allen Lavine of Mequon, WI and Barry Lavine of Portland, OR; and three nieces, Barbara Murphy of Alexandria, VA, Sharon Chaitt of Bellevue, WA and Doreen Chaitt of Bethesda, MD. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL TAKE PLACE AT CONGREGATION KOL AMI IN ELMIRA, 1008 WEST WATER STREET, ELMIRA ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2013, AT 11:00AM. Spiritual Leader Abraham Golos officiating. Burial to follow at the Temple B'Nai Cemetery on Franklin Street in Elmira with full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Kol Ami. ARRANGEMENTS BY BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

Memories and Condolences
for Sanford Barcus

Not sure what to say?

I remember when Sanford Barcus turned 100. I gave $100 to Bucknell in honor of his birthday. He wrote me a friendly note with beautiful penmanship.

I remember that he was a special friend of our family friend, Clavin Fisher, of the class of 1934. Clavin was married to a special friend, Betty Fisher, who passed away of Alzheimer's about 20 years ago. Clavin was very faithful in helping Betty at the convalescent home where she was living. When he retired, he wrote books that were all for children about history, but I believe his books are still available.

Clavin and I spent a lot of time together after Betty died and we had lunch together and spent time writing. Clavin was an SAE and he spent some time singing SAE songs to me. Clavin passed away a number of years ago of something.

I am sure that Sanford Barcus will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

I am a member of the class of 1963 and we just celebrated our 50th reunion in June. Ray Bucknell!

Please believe that thoughts and prayers are offered for strength to sustain you now and in the times to follow--prayers that will give way to memories of happier times. To the Barcus family: When I think of Colonel Barcus, many memories from Temple come to mind which immediately evoke a smile. One of my strongest memories was when I was a young adult, he loaned me a Shofar to practice prior to sounding it for the Congregation for the first time. That he trusted me to care for such a treasure was beyond words at that point. When I think back now, I realize that that single act of kindness and trust has stayed with me all these years.
Colonel Barcus was certainly a treasure. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Barcus Family, So sorry to see of Sanford's passing. He was a coach and mentor to me when I worked for him in the Guidance Unit at ECF. He taught me all I needed to know to succeed him after his retirement. I will be forever grateful to him for sharing his knowledge with me- it made me a better counselor, and had a great deal to do with my career in Corrections. I am sure you will share your fond memories of him. I do, and will keep him in my thoughts. My deepest sympathies to all of you.
