Howard was a long term player on the jazz scene in Elmira. He told me that he started working at Green Pastures at age 8, fetching ice and other small jobs and grew to be the owner of the Jazz Club. We had so much fun over the years. Thanks for the memories Howard.

"We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday,
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence,
We often speak your name.
Now all we have are memories,
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keep sake,
With which we'll never part.
God has you in his keeping,
We have you in our hearts!"

My sympathy to your family.
I remember Howard Sr and and his wife Arti coming to my house for holiday parties in the 70's. I was just a child and what a great couple they were. I as an adult still share many stories with my family about Howard,Sr, and the one that sticks out is with my father and grandfather about a trip to a Cleveland Browns game that your father organized as a Green Pastures trip. What a great friend he was to my family. he will be missed.

I know we are all feeling a little bit sad,
That we've lost our Papi, our friend and our dad
Together we have cried an ocean of tears
As we feel so empty and hold many fears
But Papi would want us to know he's in a good place
And that he watching us all with a smile on his face
As we have made him so proud, as proud as can be
That he has raised such a beautiful and special family
Thinking back now I really must say
I feel lucky and privileged to have known Papi to this day
For in my life, you have played a special part
The memories we will treasure and keep close our you heart's
"For me I am glad my little baby girl..you got to meet"
And for all of us, be grateful, his life is now complete
To each one of us he has loved and cared
And family, be thankful for the all good times we shared
Although he has gone we will always be together
And his spirit will live on each one of us forever
When you look to the sky, look for the brightest star
As that will be Papi looking down on us from afar
And now I would like to thank the good Lord above
For blessing us with our Papi with his kindness and love
Dear God, if it is not too much fuss
Take extra special care of our Papi as he is very dear to us
Papi if you are listening say a prayer for us every day
Be sure to protect us and guide us on our way
We know when God called you, you had to go
But we want you to know Artiemeasia B. Coleman & Howard C. Coleman Sr
we miss you and love you so....
Love Always....

I still remember the times when My parents took us to Green Pastures for dinner and Jazz Night and Howard was always there making sure everyone was having a good time! It was one of the most memorable days as a kid growing up. Those are the kind of things that he will be remembered for - for making people smile and bringing laughter in their lives. And while it's going to be very difficult to think of this world without him, it is a happy thought knowing that in Heaven, he is only spreading happiness.

I'M FREE
Don't grive for me, for now i'm free
I'm following the path Jehovah laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I coule not sta another day.
To laugh,to love, to work or play.
I tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my times seems all to brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
Jehovah Wanted me now, He set me free.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

On behalf of the Vickers family (my wife Shawanda, Cynthia/Wesley Wilson & Patsy Vickers), we extend our love & prayers to the Coleman family. Mr. Howard Coleman Sr. had a profound & positive impact on our lives. He was a role model we all loved & admired. Needless to say, we could not wait to become of legal age as we then could finally go to the legendary jazz club, "Green Pastures"! What wonderful & fantastic memories!!
In essence, Mr. Howard Coleman Sr. was the "Godfather", a renaissance man before his time & will always be fondly remembered as a man of all seasons.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of your dear precious Dad! My Dad introduced me to Green Pastures, as he sat in on many a jam session there with George and the gang. I am just one of thousands of musicians who performed at Green Pastures over the years and feel privileged to have played in his club and also to have sat down and hang out with him after the gig, as many of us did. He always had something to say and often he spoke about how people just didn't respect or love jazz music as much as he thought they should have. He never minced his words, said what was on his mind and cared for the music as much as any musician who played for him. I will never forget how beautiful a person he was to me and generous he was to let me be part of his "scene" for the last 20 years. I miss you Howard and LOVE YOU MADLY.

To the Coleman Family,
What can I say my heart goes out to you all during this very difficult time. Even though we know we are not going to be here forever it is still hard to accept when one of our loved ones leaves. I know Mr. Howard is in the presence of the Lord just by virtue of how he lived his life. You all will continue to be in my prayers for strength and comfort. To my granddaughter (KiKi) know that your "Papi" will always be with you as you have his blood running thru your veins, you are a part of his legacy so make him proud......I am always here for you and love you very much. Mr. Howard got me my first job out of highschool at Westinghouse Electronic Tube Division, and it is because of him that I learned how to work thru adversity on the job as I was the only African American working in the accounting department at that time and he would always tell me to keep my head up and do the best that I could and they would have no other choice but to respect me. "It worked" thank you Mr. Howard for being who you were.... you will be greatly missed.

dear coleman family.... my deepest regrets over your loss of a wonderful man who,with his brother roly, contributed so much to the elmira community. my great experiences at green pastures led me to another great jazz venue in rochester (the pythodd) where i lived for 45 years after leaving elmira. roly i will never forget when i was about 14 you gave me the foul line at the elmira armory at half time in a game you were playing when i made three (underhand) foul shots in a row. you clapped for me. my memories of the coleman family go back to the late 40s when my mother volunteered at the neighborhood house. what wonderful friendships developed from that. my deepest sympathies are with all colemans. renny bowers
