DERICO, Nicholas J. "Nick"
Age 81, of Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Nicholas was born on February 11, 1932 in Canandaigua, NY, son of the late Anthony and Lena (DiMartino) DeRico. Nicholas was predeceased by his sons, James, Nicholas Jr. and Anthony, sisters and brother-in-law, Theresa and Larry Servedio and Catherine Wood, along with his German Shepard and pal "Lucky." Nicholas served our country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from the US Postal Services in Elmira in 1999 after 40 years of dedicated service as a letter carrier. Nicholas was the President of the Letter Carrier Union Branch #21 since 1987 to present day. Prior to 1987 he was the Vice President for the Union for 20 years. In January of 2013 Nicholas received recognition from the union by naming the Letter Carrier Union Branch #21 after him. Nicholas was proud to serve, protect and guide his union members with loyalty and dedication. His memory will live on as the torch is passed to Elton Shaw. He was an active community servant in Elmira. Volunteering with the Southern Tier Food Bank, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Can & Bottle Drive, Cub Scouts and coaching for Southport Recreation, along with Mark Twain Little League. Founder and coach of the Elmira Babe Ruth. Nicholas was a life-long communicant of St. Peter & Paul's Church and the Eagles Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, sports enthusiast, NY Yankees Fan and also loved the horses. Nicholas is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Mary "Babe"; daughters, Donna (Robert) Ramundo of Pearl River, NY, Mary Ann (Jason) Hemphill of Hampton, NH and Theresa (David) Daniels of Pine City, NY; grandchildren, Jennifer, Peter and Stephen Ramundo, Dominique (Hunter) Jackson, David Salvacion, Anthony Hemphill, David, Joseph and Maria Daniels, Nicholas DeRico III, Angela (Peter) DeRico-Fagan, Michelle, Stephanie and Jessica DeRico; great grandchildren, Lotus, Aiden, Damian and Isabella DeRico; several nieces and nephews; Best friend "brother", Danny (Sandy) Emanuel. Family and friends are invited to call Monday, April 1, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held there on Tuesday, April 2, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sts. Peter & Paul's Church with Fr. Richard Farrell as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In life dad loved, guided and protected his children with his last breathe and will continue to do so in eternity.
