He was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy (Nowak) Smith in 2007 and their daughter, Mary Judith Kelemen in 1973. Bill is survived by his sons and daughters, William (Priscilla) Smith III of Big Flats, NY, Bonnifer (Les) Schweizer of Cayuta, NY, Deborah (Terry) Burlingame of Keuka Lake, NY, Michael (Maureen) Smith also of Big Flats, NY; grandchildren, Justin (Denise) Smith, Amanda (Robert) Phillips, Tambi, Lindsey and Kyle Schweizer, Korinne Shortino, Tyler, Connor and Austin Smith; great-grandchildren, Madeline and Lex Kekic, McKenzie and Madison Smith and Evan and Davis Phillips; sister, Virginia Clifford of Cape Cod, MA; and a host of neighbors, constituents and close and caring friends and extended family members including his nephew, Stephen (Liz) Smith of Rochester, NY. He was a local graduate of Corning Free Academy and graduate from the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell University in 1938. Praised for his one-man campaign to protest the largesse of the federal government's agricultural subsidy program, his drive to Washington in July 1961 gained national attention. One year later in 1962 he was elected to the NY State Senate. He described himself as a "Conservative Republican" – a label that he would proudly and steadfastly wear for the length of the long legislative career that lasted for the next 24 years, until his retirement in 1986 -- the longest-ever tenure for a local state senator, and one of the longest in the Senate's illustrious history. He was a lifelong farmer and operator of Smithome Farms and Smithome Farms Kitchen. Throughout his career Bill remained an advocate of farming and agriculture and was also instrumental in the development of the New York STOP-DWI Association. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Our condolences to the Smith family from former Big Flats neighbors. I have very fond memories of Smithhome Farms and some of the very best food. My parents, Dave & Jeanne Griffiths, used to take us 4 kids frequently and we loved it. The Presbyterian Church played a huge part in our lives, too. May God Bless and your memories warm your hearts-they will always be with you in spirit....

I never met Senator Smith, but I always admired his philosophy. He was way ahead of his time. I will miss knowing he is no longer with us.

Bonnie and family : "End of an era" takes on a special meaning with the passing of your father. Your mother and father were so much a part of Big Flats that everyone knew them or you, or the whole family. You know your parents will be in the memories of all in the community for the wonderful things they did for so many other. Ann and Gary Brouse.

Bill and Dorothy always loomed vividly in my young life..from annual trips to the house at Keuka, to clear memories of him riding in the pink convertible cadillac in the 4th of July Parade, and the shower they gave us before our wedding. Mine was only a brief glimpse on a long life, of course, but well remembered.

Kindest Regards, Rich and Marla Minier, Scituate, Massachusetts

We are very sorry for your loss. Your father was a good man and a good friend to our dad Frank Brady. I often had the pleasure of sitting in on his visits to my dad after the two of them no longer got together to play golf.

He will surely be missed and was a big part of Big Flats history. From the Brady's on Rt. 352.

Deborah and family,

We share the last name and I was always asked if we were related growing up. My first memories of Bill were as a young boy stopping at Smith Home Farms with my dad and seeing him there. He was bigger than life and what a great man. Our paths then crossed many time in the years to come but my best memory was when I took him with me to Lake Placid for a STOP DWI conference. We talked and talked and he made a 5 hour trip seem like a drive across town. To me he was one of the smartest people I have ever known and his way he related to people still to this day amazes me. Please accept my condolences and prayers I wish I could be there.
