Seth Sakai Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2007.
SETH "SAI" SAITA SAKAI May 22, 1932 - May 10, 2007 Seth, of Honolulu, passed away May 10, 2007 at Queen's Medical Center. He graduated from Iolani in 1950 and attended the University of Hawaii. While serving in the U.S. Army in upstate New York, he developed his love for jazz, often using weekend passes to visit the Birdland. A man of many talents and interests, he played guitar with the Chidori Orchestra, and raced midget cars in the old Civic Auditorium, even winning a race or two. Being a hunter and cowboy was another passion, so weekends were often spent riding, roping, and ranching in Kamuela and Waimanalo. He trained in kendo (Japanese martial art of fencing), eventually earning a 3rd degree black belt. He was both production and sales manager for Royal Hawaiian Perfumes and then was a manufacturers' rep for various companies including Hanes Hosiery. Unable to stay retired, for the past 6 years he was an insurance associate with Aflac. Seth was a member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 30 years. He began his career on a dare, and landed a speaking part on Hawaii 5-0. He shaved his head for a role in Hawaii 5-0, long before bald was in fashion. He often played the "heavy" in Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I., Airwolf and other television shows and movies. HIs last movie, American Pastime, was shown at the Hawaii International Film Festival this past April. He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Patti" Sakai, his son, Jason D. (Vini) Sakai, and his 4 grandchildren, Christopher, Jordan, Kellie, and Taylor. Vistitation begins at 10:00 a.m. on June 9, 2007 at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Avenue. Service at 11:00 a.m. Aloha attire. No flowers, but bring memories and stories to share with the family and friends.

I met Patti and Seth through our job here at the Battleship Missouri. They were our AFLAC team. We remember him here as the man that would tell us "Make sure you get your receipt, you can get money for that!" He made us laugh and he poked fun at me for being "clumsy" and told me I did good since I got the accident plan...He was a wonderful man and he will be truly missed...Patti we love you!!!

I met Mr. Sakai once at the old Times supermarket in Niu Valley. I approached him, introduced myself and told him that I had recently returned from a trip to the Dallas-Ft Worth area and for some reason, my last night there, I just could not sleep so I ended up watching TV. The movie
"Midway" was on in which Mr. Sakai had a part followed by a "5-0" episode in which Mr. Sakai played a police Capt. helping McGarrett look for the bad guy played by local boy Don Stroud. We had a nice conversation and laugh.

David & Lucy Dilworth

June 11, 2007

We have known Sai for many years - a bit before he decided he wanted to fall in love and marry Lucy's best friend - Pat. Over the years we have visited Hawaii from the mainland and always got together for dinner. Our two children have always called Sai "Uncle Sai" as if one of the family. We have followed, with interest, his professional, acting and especially spiritual journey. We remember the great times when Pat & Sai visited us on the mainland as well as our Hawaii trips. He was a great friend and will be missed. In a recent loss of David's mother he clung to a song by Chris Rice - "Untitled Hymn". Listen carefully to the words and it will describe Sai's life perfectly. One of our greatest moments was when we learned that Pat & Sai turned to Christ. Because of this, we can have the joy of knowing that Sai will be with his Father in peace and joy.
