In 1985, John was elected to the McKinney City Council and served until 1991. He was elected and served as Mayor of McKinney until 1997, a period of great economic expansion.

The McKinney Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 1999. In 2009, the City of McKinney named its newest library after John & Judy Gay.

I did not know John, though we were 1st cousin, once removed apparently. I may have met him in person about 70 years ago at my great grandmother's home in McKinney . I did speak to him on the phone a couple of times. He was very nice and helpful, sending me a xerox of the family bible pages
. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and send condolences to his family.
