Rae Torrey Obituary

RAE TORREY Rae Torrey died peacefully at her home on May 10, 2018, the very same day her mother passed away nine years earlier. She is preceded by her parents Hattie and Brad Torrey and survived by her daughters Tammy Baker and her family, Matt, Murphy and Tanner who live in the Woodlands, Texas and Paige Sheehan and her family, Patrick and Connor, who live in Concord, North Carolina. Rae loved her family and friends; Maxi the cat and all animals; great purses and shoes; shopping; the beach; British television; nicknames for her chums; the color red; gossip magazines; the women's movement; anything that could be monogrammed; angels and so much more. She disliked poor tippers, buffet food, rude people and tears. She was a member of the North Carolina Sorosis Club, and active in a Wilmington needlepoint group and knitting guild even though there was little evidence that she completed projects before finding something new to start. Rae never cooked and used her oven for storage, but cherished great food and the conversation and laughter that goes with having a meal together. Rae was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1943 then lived in 11 states while working in the hotel business. She made countless friends who remember her quick wit and humor, candor, honesty and opinions that left little to the imagination. For nearly two decades she beat a complex group of diseases and wanted the medical community to learn from her life. With that in mind, Rae donated her body to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and will be cremated at a later time. A soiree will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. on May 21 at the North Carolina Sorosis Clubhouse at 20 North Cardinal Drive in Wilmington to celebrate Rae's wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Best Friends Animal Society.
