MARY CATHERINE NORTHROP Mary Catherine Northrop, age 83, passed away Monday September 3rd, 2018 at Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington NC. The daughter of the late Mary Catherine Parker Northrop and William Scarlett Northrop of Wilmington, NC. She is survived by her beloved niece/daughter and best friend, Kelli Avery Dove (Charles Brian Dove) and loving sister Lillie Northrop Robinson. Mary also had many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her siblings, William Steadman Northrop, James Harris Northrop, and Sue Northrop Avery. She was born on April 10, 1935 at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, NC. An exemplary student, Mary was co-valedictorian of New Hanover High School in 1953. She completed her undergraduate degree in Nursing at The Medical College of Virginia in 1958 and received her Master's Degree in maternal child Nursing at East Carolina University in 1988. She dedicated a large part of her life to a career in nursing as the Head Nurse of Babies Hospital at Wrightsville Beach until their closing in 1978, and then as a Nurse Educator and Nurse manager at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Many will remember her kind gentle spirit and fierce attention to detail. Her passion for reading and education was evident early in her life, as she would often sneak out on her chores and be found reading a book. As an adult, she had read thousands of books and made the New Hanover County Public Library a big part of her life. Along with being an avid reader, she had many hobbies that included a love for animals, gardening, bird watching, and spending time with family. There will be a visitation for family and friends on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 6:00 pm -7:00 pm, at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Andrews Market Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hanover County Public Library or Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Condolences may be left at www.andrewsmortuary.com

Kelli so sorry for your loss. I love the story of how your Aunt Mary became your "Friendy " . Then you were kind enough to introduce and share her with us and she became Friendy to us. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed.

Miss Mary, I enjoyed our time working together at Babies Hospital. Little did we know at that time that your nephew Jay would grow up to be my son Eric's soccer coach. It truly is a small world. Rest in peace Miss Mary.

So sorry for the family's loss. It's times like these when we can reflect on the loving promises of our heavenly Father. He can bring us comfort and he can soften some of the pain we are feeling in our hearts. (1 Th 4:13,14) May God grant all of you strength, guidance and peace during your time of sorrow. Sincerely,

Keli made sure that she spent time with her... always heard her say "After this run I'm gonna go spend time with Friendy!"
