Charles Elbert Tingley Obituary
CHARLES ELBERT TINGLEY Charles Elbert Tingley, 81, passed away September 22 after a fiercely fought battle with cancer, but not before his children and grandchildren had a chance to say goodbye. He was a resident of Wilmington, North Carolina and enjoyed his summers in Bloomfield, CT. Mr. Tingley was born in Braddock, PA on March 1, 1938 to Rev. Elbert Roy Tingley and Catherine DeMay Tingley. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where he excelled on the football field. He received a football scholarship from the University of Virginia and was awarded a Bachelor of Economics in 1964. He was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and was a life-long ardent "Cavalier", attending and supporting the "Hoos" athletic programs. During these years, he also served in the United States Army Reserve, stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY. After graduation, he worked for Allied Chemical from 1964-1972. He then joined Itel Corporation in 1972 as Vice President of North/South American divisions. After locating to Chicago, Indianapolis and Houston with extensive travel throughout South America, Charles made his last career move in 1979 to Transamerica Container Leasing in White Plains, New York. In 1988 Transamerica Corp. was restructured, and he became president of Transamerica Leasing, Purchase, NY and then CEO in 1990. He retired in 1999. With Transamerica's cargo containers stationed throughout the world, his business travels took him to major transportation ports: London, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and Cape Town, among others. In sharing his love of world travel with his children, he would take each of them individually on lengthy trips to Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, England and Sweden, with spring vacations in Mexico. After retirement, Charles continued his love of far away places and, accompanied by his wife, Lida, played some of the finest golf courses throughout the world. He enjoyed his affiliations with the Hartford Golf Club, the Country Club of Landfall, and the Ocean Reef Club. He was also an avid sailor, delighting in challenging the winds on Long Island Sound in his "Freedom" which was moored at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and, in recent years with fishing tackle aboard, he piloted his "Pursuit" off the coast of North Carolina. Charles was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He relished spending as much time as he could with his three grandchildren, often taking them individually on excursions, be it touring New York City while staying at the Plaza or canoeing on the Farmington River. His parents and sister, Catherine Tingley Carroll, predeceased him. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Lida Fee Tingley, whom he met in his second year at "The University"; his son, Chad Tingley and wife, Cara of Brookfield, CT, and daughter, Kristin Tingley of Stevensville, MI; three grandchildren, Adrianna Tingley, Spencer Tingley and Gabriel Tingley His life will be celebrated by family and friends on Sunday, October 20, 2:00 PM at The Hartford Golf Club, 134 Norwood Rd. West Hartford, CT. An interment will be held at the Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name can be made to The Salvation Army, Donor Relations, 217 Washington Street, Hartford, CT 06106 and the Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale-New Haven, 20 York Street, New Haven, CT 06510-3202.
