DONNA RAE BROOKS Donna Rae Brooks (Spark), age 83, known to friends as, "Miss Donna" passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 in Wilmington, NC. Donna was born October 1, 1934 to a military family and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. She later served the United States Air Force as a Drill instructor and after an honorable discharge she earned her MS in Psychology. She spent the first half of her life in Spokane, WA and then moved to NC. Her professional career was dedicated to the field of recovery and addiction. She had fifty years of sobriety, volunteered in prison facilities, was an active Catholic, and advocate for many. She was known for many things in her lifetime but her sass, kindness, sense of humor, and love is what she will be most remembered by. Donna was preceded in death by her mother, Eloyce Gainey and her father, John Spark, two daughters, Robin Harrington and Kelly Cherms, and step-father, Archie Gainey. She is survived by sister, Sally Blackwell (Roy), brother, Fred Gainey, grandchild, Adra Harrington, five great-grandchildren, niece, Jean Blackwell, great niece, Sarah Blackwell, nephew, Michael Gainey, three cousins, along with her advocate and friend Jennifer Davidson as well as a community of loving friends. At Donna's request, her body will be donated to East Carolina University, The Brody School of Medicine for education and research. A celebration of Donna's life will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Watermark Marina, 4114 River Rd., Wilmington, NC.
