Dorothy Miller Obituary

DOROTHY RHODES MILLER Dorothy Mae Williamson Rhodes Miller, of Wilmington, passed away on July 3, 2020 at 101 years of age. Dorothy was born in Wilmington, NC on January 16, 1919 to the late Ernest Shaw and Lula Pearl Williamson. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Thomas (Tommy) Rhodes, Sr. (1959), her second husband, John (Jack) E. Miller (2005), five brothers: Buddie, Norman, Earl, Jack and Ed Williamson and two sisters: Betty Williamson Lorick and Melissa Williamson. Dorothy lived her entire life in Wilmington. There was always a smile for everyone and she enjoyed caring for others. She lived a full and active life filled with many friends and family members. To her adoring grandchildren she was an exceptionally loving Nana, always being there no matter what. She and her husband, Tommy, owned and operated the Chic-Chic Drive-In. She was a member of Sunset Park Baptist Church. She was among the first group of "Pink Ladies" at New Hanover Memorial Hospital, an active member of the American Business Women's Association for over 50 years, and a member of the Goldenrod Chapter 142 Order of the Eastern Star for over 25 years. Throughout her long life she was an accomplished league bowler, enthusiastic square dancer, and avid duplicate bridge player in the American Contract Bridge League. Until recently, she lived independently at the Lake Shore Commons Senior Community. Dorothy is survived by her loving family, sons - S. Thomas (Tommy) Rhodes, Jr. and wife Kleist of Raleigh and Ronald (Ronnie) E. Rhodes and wife Becky of Wilmington; grandchildren - Ashely Rhodes Scruggs of Boone, Brandon Rhodes and wife Karen of Raleigh and Kristy Rhodes of Wilmington; great grandchildren - Madison, Parker & Hunter Scruggs, Jordan Foster and Aiden Rhodes; stepsons - Chuck Miller and wife Jeanetta and Mitch Miller and wife Kathy all of California; stepdaughter - Denile Kosten and husband Bob of California; step grandsons - Casey and Farley Miller; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much. It was her wish, and the family joins her, to thank our late close family friends, Lacy and Carolyn Pearce, for their care and compassion over 50+ years and the continuation of the same by their daughter, Bettie Anne West. Due to COVID-19 there will not be a visitation. Graveside services for anyone who wishes to attend will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Saturday, July 11 at 11:00AM. Condolences may be shared with the family and more information can be found at www.andrewsmortuary.com. I loved Mrs. Miller so much. As a child, my parents played bridge with couples and I spent a lot of time playing at her house. Momma, Mrs. Pearce and she did lots of shopping trips to outlet malls in Myrtle Beach, Smithfield and Raleigh. I was dragged along on many of those as well. She was always thinking of others. Just a couple of years ago she was taking food to a sick friend, she was nearly 100 then! Christmas was always a festive time and boy she cooked some of the most delicious food! When my daughter was born, Mrs. Miller loaned me Ashley's smocked dresses. I felt so special, but anyone who was ever in contact with her felt the same way. She was a wonderful part of my life and I will miss her terribly.

I met Dotty 10 yrs ago at ABWA . She was the oldest and I the youngest and we light the candles together at our installation. Dorothy was always smiling and laughing, always happy . She moved to Ashley Park up the street fro me and I offered to drive her to our meetings. It was a true pleasure to know Dorothy in my life in Wilmington. God Bless her soul as she enters heaven to rest. And my Condolences to her family as they mourn their mothers passing. Boy's if you have her health and you'll be living past 100.

Dorothy was a good friend to my mother Martha Alford, they were both very active at Sunset Park Baptist Church and in the same Sunday School class. I always enjoyed being around all those ladies as they were so energetic and usually up to something fun! Dorothy was there for me when my mother passed away 10 years ago this year.
May you find comfort in knowing that Dorothy was a special lady with special talents for helping others. My thoughts and prayer are with you all.

Dorothy lived beside my Aunt Nell for about 60 years. Every time I visited my aunt, I always made sure to visit with Dorothy. She was such a kind and delightful lady to be around. Through the years, her bright positive personality inspired me to look at life difficulties In a more positive manner. I will always remember our talks, her visits to see Aunt Nell at Trinity and all of her sweet and thoughtful ways. She endeared herself to so many. She was A true Southern Lady./

I knew Dot (as I called her) in earlier days when I babysat for Ronnie, who at the time was a small boy. Every Thursday she and Jack would go square dancing and I sat with Ronnie. She was such a beautiful person. My life friend, Mary, was her niece and that is really how I got to know her. She has lived a long and very fruitful life and I am proud that I got to know her. She was the best. God be with her family.

Dear Tommy & Kleist - So sorry to read about your loss. Dorothy was so much fun to be around and she and Jack were a vibrant pair and so much a part of our GOP family! She certainly had a long and fulfilling life with a wonderful multi-generational family. Our best wishes, Patti and Bruce Smithson
