Those jobs included working on shrimp, fish, menhaden, and charter fishing boats; Kilpatrick Funeral Home, for the county repairing schools and painting in the summer, sawing wood for people to burn in the winter - anything to help his mother. After graduating from Southport High School in 1954, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving on the USS Delta all over the Pacific and was a proud Navy veteran. After he got out of the Navy, he attended Wilmington College and East Carolina University - dropping out for a year after his mother died. He went back to college at Pembroke College where he finished his degree. He was the first drivers education teacher in Brunswick County; worked for the Register of Deeds of Brunswick County; helped develop Memory Lane in Southport; built houses in Southport and Long Beach as well as his own home. His last job before retiring was Captain of the Guard Force at Sunny Point. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening and supplying vegetables to all of his friends and neighbors. He was a wonderful carpenter - building furniture and repairing everything at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judy Young White and is survived by his wife, Trudy McNeil Young of the home; a son, Joseph Manning Young (Heather) of Poulsbo, Washington; step-son, Erik Hufham (Missy), step-daughter, Katherine Hufham, step-daughter, Marie Hufham Hughes (Curtis) of Southport; three beloved grandchildren - Jackson Young of Poulsbo, Washington; Grant Hufham of Greenville, North Carolina, and Ashley Hufham of Spring Lake, North Carolina; a niece; Fran White of Southport; and great-nephews, Garrett Swain and Bryan Swain of Southport.
