MARY BURNS PETERSON LENNON Mary Burns Peterson Lennon, died August 10, 2018, at her home on Cliffside Drive, Wilmington, after a period of declining health. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Coleman Lennon. Mary was born March 4, 1927, in the Northwest Community in Brunswick County to Vera and Oscar Peterson. Growing up in the Northwest Community, Mary was involved with her family in worship at Goshen Baptist Church. Mary was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Wilmington, NC, and served her church teaching Adult Sunday School classes. She was president of the Women's Missionary Union and served in the kitchen for Wednesday night church suppers. Mary served in the Wilmington Baptist Association, promoting missions activities. She was a graduate of Leland High School, second in her class, and graduated from King Business College in Raleigh. Mary is survived by her daughter, Clarice Lennon Willoughby, her son-in-law, John Willoughby, Jr.; three grandchildren, Hannah, Henry and Lillie; her sister, Elsie Peterson; nieces and nephews, Evelyn Hall and Lynda Walker, Terry, Harry, and Glen Peterson, Paula Peterson and Dale Peterson; Monica Watson and Paula (Judson) Croom. The family offers special thanks to longtime friends, Yvonne Lewis and Martha McIntosh, and special thanks also to the staff at Home Instead, especially Paulette Godding and Rosa Messick. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Goshen Baptist Church, 4124 Mt. Misery Road, N.E., Leland, NC, with Dr. Barbara Bell, Rev. Kelly Stanley and Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM Tuesday until the service hour. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery.
