PAUL LEROY LUCAS JR. Paul LeRoy Lucas Jr. of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, was born on November 11, 1952 in Sanford, North Carolina to the late Myrtle Buie and the late Paul Lucas Sr. He passed away at the age of 65 on September 17, 2018 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Paul was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Irene Vasquez Lucas; his two sons, Paul-Joseph Lucas and wife Katelin Lucas, and Christopher Lucas and wife Amy Lucas; as well as two cherished grandchildren, Jack Lucas and Olivia Lucas. He also leaves behind his brother John Lucas, and sister Margaret Lucas, and was preceded in death by his brother Charles Lucas and both his parents. Paul graduated from Benhaven High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Appalachian State University. He worked for New Hanover County schools for over 33 years. Paul spent most of his years as a social studies teacher at E.A. Laney High School with his passion being US History, from the first year it opened in 1976 until his retirement in 2008. Paul was a valued member of the Buccaneer community serving as Student Council Advisor and Student Activities Director for many years. He was a mentor to many teachers during his career and earned the honor of Teacher of the Year in 1993 and 1997. It was at Laney that he met the love of his life, fellow teacher, Irene, and the two became inseparable. To his Laney family and friends, Paul was affectionately known as "Mr. Laney." Paul was a gentle man that was respected and loved by all who knew him. Friends, family members, and students are welcomed to attend the memorial service, officiated by Rob Strickland, on Saturday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church, 2501 N College Rd., Wilmington, NC 28405.
