BURTON G. SHIRO WATERVILLE, ME. On March 5, 2016, Burton Grant Shiro, 92, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at Mount Saint Joseph in Waterville. Burton was born in Newtonville, MA to Celia and Louis Shiro on July 26, 1923. He moved to Waterville as a young boy and was educated in local area schools. He graduated from Colby after his college education was interrupted by 2 years of WWII army service spent primarily in the South Pacific where he was severely wounded during combat. Burton was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart, The Meritorious Unit Emblem, The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars (New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns) and Arrowhead for an amphibious assault landing, The World War II Victory Medal, The Combat Infantryman Badge, The Republic of Philippines Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. Burton went on to graduate from Boston University Law School where he met his wife Phyllis Ann Kovner of Brockton, MA and to whom he was married for 64 years. Together they settled in Waterville where he established his law office and remained an active practitioner since 1950. He also enjoyed many winters and good friends in Naples, FL. Burton is survived by his wife Phyllis; his sister Gladys; his three children, Louis of Waterville, Brian of Wilmington, NC, Leslie of New York, NY, his daughter in-law Donna; and two grandchildren, Alexis and Zachary Shiro. Burton was predeceased by his parents; sisters Anna Price and Marcia Beckerman, as well as his brothers, Oren and Teddy Shiro. A former City Solicitor, State Senator, and Waterville mayoral candidate, Burton was an active member of the Waterville community and strongly supported and assisted in the establishment of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta and the passing of the mandatory seat belt law in the 1960s. Burton was a long-time Judge Advocate for the American Legion of which he was a member for 57 years and also a lifetime member of the Beth Israel Synagogue. He was also a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court. He was a dedicated attorney who defended his clients vigorously and believed in helping people in need. He was known to have accepted payment at times in the form of pies, fish and venison when his clients' resources were limited. Beloved for his special combination of strength and humor, he was a devoted and adored husband and father who enjoyed spending time attending and watching sports of all kinds, but especially his sport of football. Burton was a star high school and college athlete, becoming a Small College All-American in football. He also excelled at swimming, biking, putting, and ping-pong. He was also a City of Waterville horseshoe champion. Burton enjoyed all kinds of food and was responsible for introducing Chinese cuisine to the Central Maine area at his family's restaurant, The Jefferson. His family would like to give thanks to the many relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose love and support is so deeply appreciated. We are also grateful to the staff of MaineGeneral, as well as Dr. Atkins and the skilled nursing team at Mount Saint Joseph for their kind and compassionate care. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Beth Israel Synagogue, 291 Main Street, Waterville, ME. Burial will follow at 12 noon at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Dear Shiro Family, I am so honored to have met your dad through Caryll and Steve Greene. I knew him as a sweet man. I read his obituary and was smiling as I read all the wonderful things he did in his life. Wow. What a man. I'm so glad I knew him. Donna Cloney (Dave Kovner's wife)

Dear Phyllis, Louis, Brian, and Leslie. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you at this time. There are no words I can offer to ease the loss. Burt was very good to me, and I shall never forget his kindness. Louis often remarked that his parents were the only people he knew who had a handyman with a PhD. I can only tell you that whenever Phyllis or Burt would ask anything of me I was only too happy to do what I could as I am most fond of them both.

We wish we could be in Maine to attend the service. Men are born every day; great men far less seldom.
