AUSTIN JAMES WILSON Austin James Wilson, 18, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep January 9th, 2018 due to a preexisting condition in Orlando Florida. He was born February 5th, 1999 to Tracy-Ann Shirley and Andrew Wilson in Port Charlotte, Florida. In July of 2004, Tracy-Ann Shirley moved her family to Wilmington. In his adolescence, Austin was in The Community Boys and Girls Club Drum and Drill Team and learned to play the cymbals, snare drum, bass drum, and quads. He developed his love of working with others and his interest in building at DREAMS of Wilmington. At the age of 12 he became a member of Kids Making It Woodworking Program (KMI) which fueled his passion for architecture and building. Before completing high school, he was able to successfully complete a summer jobs program with KMI that further confirmed his devotion to work in construction with his Running-Man Crew. He also worked with Dan at Plantation Builders on his senior project. Austin graduated from New Hanover High School where he enjoyed his woodworking electives, continued to participate in KMI, and was in Band. After graduation, he was one of hundreds who applied to be an apprentice on This Old House. Because of his hard work and determination, he was selected to join This Old House's crew in the summer of 2017. It was an amazing experience for him. Austin was a student at Cape Fear Community College, working towards a degree Construction Management. Austin was thankful for all these opportunities that helped him reach his goals and make his dreams come true. Austin was also very blessed to know God and have a very supportive Church Family at The Lord's Church of Wilmington. Austin is survived by his Mother; Tracy, Grandmother; Claudia, Sisters; Nikieta, Natasha, Ny'Ashia, Ny'Iesha, and Brother; Michael Jr., as well as additional family members, aunts, uncles and cousins. Family, friends, and others whose lives Austin touched are invited to his home-going service scheduled at 12:00pm Saturday, January 20th at Warner Temple AME Zion Church located at 620 Nixon Street, Wilmington NC, 28401. Pastor R. Bruce Miller will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday, January 19th from 5-8pm at Davis Funeral Home 901 S. 5th St. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Austin Wilson Memorial Fund c/o Kids Making It 617 Castle St. Wilmington, NC 28401 or online at Please note that it's for the memorial fund. On 9/22/18 after watching the final on the house that Austin was a part. When the end of the show, Kevin O'Connor came on and informed everyone of Austin's passing. That blew me away, just starting College and his life was cut short. He is in a good place and will be seen again by everyone.

Though it was a short life, Austin touched millions nationwide as a bright sweet young man. We are a real estate development company and can tell he was such a keen, dedicated, talented worker, he was an incredible asset to any group. His legacy on TOH will inspire countless other young people in this field, which is so very needed. He will be a bright light forever!

Like a few here, I saw Austin light up the screen on This Old House. He was so full of life and potential! When I heard of his passing at the time, I was shocked and saddened. Now, so many months later, the reruns of that season are on again, and I think I shed a tear or more every time he's on screen. My heart goes out to his family, and I hope his siblings take up the torch he held - the torch to be something great. I listed myself as as student in relation to him on this page, because in his brief life, he has shown us all something about learning, striving, and living in the moment. RIP, Austin Wilson.

My husband and I were watching TOH this morning and I'd mentioned to him about the young black man who was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to be an apprentice for the show, but had passed away. Just so happen, the show came on where Austin made his first appearance. Sending my heartfelt condolences to the family, because I know it's still hard! ❤

Saw this show when he and the other two came to TOH to start on the front porch. Loved his enthusiasm towards the upcoming duties. My heart is hurting for the entire family at home and around this world he touched. Like me who (at 68 ) learned I have leukemia and will beat it with Gods help. God bless TOH for giving him this opportunity. RESPECTFULLY

I had not watched TOH for a while, but I was recently led to turn to the show a second time in just 2 months. Each time Austin's story was being told. For some, it is hard to understand why someone so young and who seemed to be a very good person would die so young.
When we understand that we serve a GOD of a 2nd chance and that this life is our 2nd chance, we realize that Austin, through his living, fulfilled his second chance and has now returned to GOD to receive the promise of eternal life.
May his family find comfort in GOD's WORD and peace that only GOD can give us when we trust in HIM. GOD used your son, brother as a precious jewel who touched so many lives which is evident in the names and places we see here. Thank you for sharing him with us.

As a viewer of TOH I was mesmarized by the enthusiasm Austin possed,he truly had a passion for the art of carpentry and was a master in his own right! I was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing in the episode that ended with the "In Memoriam" My prayers to his family. He has apparently touched many lives far and wide based on the Guest Book here.May many youth and others be inspired to pursue their passions. Gone too soon....Rest well Mr.Wilson,Rest Well!

I watched "This Old House" when Austin Wilson and the other 2 apprentices joined the team back in 2017. It was only late in January 2018 when the show mentioned the loss of Austin and then realized that he had passed. So very sad and such a great loss for all. However, thank you, the crew at TOH for continuing to honor and memorialize Austin in the new series.

A beautiful light on this earth.
Seeing him on TOH, you could see what a beautiful soul he was.
I cannot imagine the void he left behind for those that knew him and loved him.
May his light and legacy inspire young and old alike to find their passion for living and learning.
He was an old soul in a young body who, in his all too short life, left a beautiful legacy.
