PORTAL, Ga. -- Mrs. Myrle Mixon Sparks, moved to heaven Monday morning, February 4, 2019, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility in Statesboro.
She lived a long and full life and in her 95 years she witnessed many changes in the world.
A native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County, Myrle was the daughter of the late Charlie and Leila Tuberville Mixon. She attended Westside Elementary School and graduated from Statesboro High School in 1941.
She married Arthur Sparks from Portal, Georgia, during World War II and joined the family in their grocery business. She and Arthur continued to operate the family business until their retirement in 1972.
Following her retirement, Myrle cared for her grandchildren, enjoyed working with her flowers and harvested and sold pecans to many faithful customers throughout the years.
Mrs. Sparks was an active member of the Portal United Methodist Church and attended until her health declined at the end of 2018.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; and a son–in-law, Harold Finch.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lynn and Bill Strickland, Ann and Jimmy Lanier and Nan Finch, all of Portal; her loving grandchildren that visited her regularly, Jennifer Lynn Strickland of Leesburg, Leslie Thomas (Brent) of Alamo, Jason Lanier (Lea) of Statesboro, Lacey Lewis (Steven) of Statesboro, Mark Lanier of Portal, Nathan Finch (Mary) of Montgomery, Alabama; and Mandy Finch of Portal; 11 great-grandchildren, Fletcher, Will, Josh, Abby, Claire, Hudson, Henry, Sarah, Emma, Hayes and Kate.
She had many wonderful caregivers and could not always remember their names, but did recognize their faces. She always greeted them with "glad to see you".
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. George Freeman and the Rev. Don Berry officiating. Interment will be in the Portal City Cemetery with the Rev. Sonny Moon officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jason Lanier, Mark Lanier, Nathan Finch, Brent Thomas, Stephen Lewis and Wayne Laircey.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Portal City Cemetery, c/o Marion Hulsey, 108 North College Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
