STATESBORO -- Terrance Stephen Forgacs, 67, died Thursday, December 12, 2013, at Ogeechee Area Hospice with his daughter by his side. He was born in Ravenna, Ohio, to William Frank Forgacs and Claire Jean Nodine Forgacs, the youngest of three sons. He attended Southeast High School, where he was a basketball standout, and, upon graduation in 1964, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He did one tour in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Operation Hastings. After a tour of duty at San Miguel Naval Communications in the Philippines, he attended Embassy School at Quantico, Va., and was assigned to the Embassy Guard detail in Mogadishu, Somalia. He left the Marine Corps in 1971 with the rank of staff sergeant.
Terry attended Kent State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in political science. He worked for 19 years in the quality control department of Automation Plastics in Aurora, Ohio, before retiring in 2011 and moving to Statesboro to be close to his only daughter and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William.
He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Forgacs; granddaughters, Grace and Rose, all of Statesboro, Ga.; his brother, Thomas Forgacs (Faith) of Summerville, S.C.; nephews, Todd (Susan) and Chris Forgacs of Charlestown, Ohio, David Forgacs of Winter Garden, Fla., and Brian Forgacs of Summerville, S.C.
He was a self-effacing man with a wry smile, quick wit and such an inclusive warmth about him that he leaves behind a lot of people who are glad to have known him and who truly mourn this loss. They include his former wife, Katie O'Grady of Register, Ga.; and his former sister-in-law, Janet Forgacs of Charlestown, Ohio.
The sweet, attentive care he received from Ogeechee Area Hospice escorted him to "a good death" and his family will remain forever grateful to his home nurse, Sybil Kirkland, in particular.
An inurnment, with full Marine honors, will be held at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 1 p.m. on January 3, 2014.
Semper Fi, Marine.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ogeechee Area Hospice at P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30458; or the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, VA, in Terry's name.
