BROOKLET, Ga. -- Mr. Joseph Thomas "Joe" Maharrey, age 84, died November 1, 2013, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro, Georgia. Born in Ft. Myers, Florida, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Walton and Alma West Maharrey. He was a 1947 graduate of Taylor County High School and the University of Florida in 1951, with a degree in agriculture engineering. Following his graduation, Joe worked in the tractor division of Ford Motor Company. He later attended the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling. Joe began his career in drug rehabilitation with the state of Georgia, retiring in 1992 from the Department of Corrections as mental health director at Georgia State Prison. Joe lived in Statesboro from 1962 until 1970, moving to Savannah, where he remained until returning to Brooklet, Ga., in 1982. He also worked part-time for over 10 years with the Bulloch County Sherriff's Office. Joe attended the New Hope United Methodist Church.
Mr. Maharrey was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Thompson Maharrey; and son, Tom Maharrey.
Surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Neil Mazur of Atlanta and Lee and Gary Floyd of Brooklet; five grandchildren, Sam Mazur, Liza Roberson, Garrett Floyd, Mandy Myers and Alana Olson; three brothers, Tommy McCloud of Dothan, Ala., Byron Maharrey of Palm Springs, Fla., and Pat Maharrey of North Ft. Myers; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Joyce Lilliott.
Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
A Celebration of Life service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephanie Smith officiating. Private inurnment services will be held at a later time.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O.
